Black nasty questions considering a pair

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd also like to state that I'm extremely jealous of all you Haitiensis keepers, what a fish. Almost debating selling my Oscura Heterospilus and JD's for some, the struggle is real.

I tried them with other fish, when I first got haiiensus, but if they couldn't kill the other fish, they died, so I've never bothered with any other fish ever again, just the pair in my 6ft 150 gal.
BTW, I don't believe haitiensus need tall tanks, you are better off with a minimum 6ft tank, and large foot print, which would offer line of sight breaks when privacy from each other is needed

I find the interest in them funny.
When I had haitiensus fry, I had a hard time giving them away.
I was taking bags of fry to gcca meetings and giving the bags to whoever would take them. A few years latter, a guy that took a number of them from me, put his mated pair, and lots of fry up for our local auction.
The mated pair went for @ $10, and bags of 10 fry were going for $1 each

Wow, I'm not sure why they are beautiful fish. I don't see anyone local keeping them and never seen them in any lfs. If I had I would already have a pair lol. Possibly the bloat issue from stress might have given them a bad rep? And no tankmates people are usually not fond of that.

Really wish I would have went to the auctions back then hahah

It's best to get fry from different parents in hopes of a pair right? Would it be better to order like 3 from one place and then 3 others from another place rather than ordering 6 from the same place and hoping for a pair?

That is the ideal goal if you're going to try to sell the offspring. If you're wanting to just keep a pair for yourself and don't plan to sell the offspring then it doesn't matter if they're related or not. Typically only after many courses of inbreeding do you get deformed fry and even then they're usually pretty easy to spot at the 1.5-" mark

Hmmm I just want to keep a pair. I'm not too concerned about offspring. But if they're related, would there be any compatibility issues? And what happens if I don't do anything if they decide to breed? Will they eventually eat the fry?

They'd bond and be just as compatible as 2 unrelated fish. I'm sure there's plenty of threads on this so we don't fill up OPs post. And typically once the fry get so large and they're ready to spawn again they will eat the fry
