Black Pete

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What's not to get? Just something we celebrate instead of Santa Claus. A white guy with black helpers but apparently now all of sudden it is racist.

I was suppose to gather that from your post and pic? so are the helpers REALLY white since you say they're black from going down chimneys? Santa doesn't go down too? is it a comedy? A tv show? A real religion celebration?

Ohh I see. I didn't mean to be a smartass by the way.

It's a day we celebrate nationally. Not anything to do with religion as far as I know.
He brings presents to the kids just like Santa.

I always was pretty sure it was because of the chimney.. but now that it is such a problem all of sudden I am not quite sure anymore.

This is what I love about the lounge on MFK;) It's the perfect opportunity for me to once in a while ask Americans about their opinion on subjects like this.

so you guys celebrate a holiday where a santa like character has a black elf like helper and people are offended by it? the only thing i find odd is that the helper is even named. i can't name a single elf from santa folklore. maybe we should call one white peter?

you guys should see my mom's place. she's got black santa's all over the place and i'm pretty sure the elves are white *gasps* don't tell the UN.

The issue has to do with history. The US has a bad history with African Americans, which dates back to the slave trade and beyond. The difference is that many Eurpoean nations didn't have slavery, and those that did, abolished it early on. England abolished slavery back in the 1830's.

Yes well sort of. We have Santa as well but most people only celebrate Sinterklaas because it is both in December.

Black Santa's.. well that's new to me.

At least the UN has decided it's not a problem:

"The Dutch tradition of Santa Claus and his blacked-up servant, Black Pete, is safe from United Nations interference, a Unesco official has assured Holland.

In mid-November, Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus, who is white, arrives by steamboat in Amsterdam bringing presents for children helped by mischievous servants dressed as pageboys, wearing black make-up, curly wigs and with large, painted on red lips.

A Facebook site defending Zwarte Piet and the Dutch festival of Sinterklaas, which gave rise to the Christmas tradition of Santa Claus, has become the country's most popular ever."

I used to live in Philly until I moved to Las Vegas (yes people do live here) when I was 10. Philadelphia has ALOT more African Americans around then they do out here, or in the West (minus California) for that manner. I noticed that many people out here still have this "cautiousness" about African Americans that I didn't have in Philly since there were many more around and multiple races grew up around each other. Just wondering your thoughts on all this @phillydog1958 (and NO Eagles talk haha)

ballinouttacntrol remove that pic of Santa! If my wife see's it she will be out or I'll be out lookin for one cause its something Christmas she don't have....yet
