Black Pete

eddie and krich

I understand the history of blackface. I didn't know what it was and had to look it up. but what did that actress do that was offensive? her costume was crazy eyes. I don't see the need for her to apologize. she's basically apologizing for people taking it wrong

I can understand the offense if someone's costume was of blackface just like I can understand the offense if someone's costume was of a kkk member.

but because of blackface, no one is allowed to paint their face and be a black character for Halloween?

my nephew was barack Obama one time, but he bought a mask that he wore over his head. now if he had decided to paint his face, that would be offensive? i'm really trying to understand this

By the way she just replied again saying

"why continue to create segregation between races we are all human.
Blacks have the tendency to get offended too quickly by these kind of things. Yes we have a history and yes that is painful but it is absurd to whine about every small thing that you can find. That guy who started this should just grow up and get a life.
Let's play the role of the victim again and blame whites for everything that went wrong in this world is what some seem to think.
But then again white people are not always very careful with the words that they choose sometimes. But still finding a solution for these kind of things comes from two sides."

Those were her words not mine.

i never said i was offended by this or blackfaces, i just brought up some people are offended by it (because of it's history and original use)

if i've learned anything from the internet and conversations with friends over the years, different people are offended by different things. Rarely does a whole culture/race get offended by something but clearly we all have different likes, dislikes, kinks and things that offend us.

so just because i'm not offended or his gf isn't offended or anyone on this thread isnt offended, doesn't mean i wont' find a bunch of people who ARE offended.

where society chooses to draw the line on how many people are offended by something for it to be considered offensive is beyond me. it's really no different then the redskins issue that's making it's way through our media right now. a bunch of people aren't offended by the usage of the term redskin, a group of native americans are petitioning and runnning ads requesting that the racial slur not be used. i don't need to be native american to recognize that some people are offended and i don't need to be black to recognize that some black folks may be offended by black pete or blackfaces. you guys don't need to be able to relate to understand that some people are offended either. just like i don't need to agree with li deciding to block g@y even though MOST people don't consider it offensive. some things just rub people the wrong way

ps, i find it offensive that OP gf just grouped all "blacks" together. i was unaware that i get offended too easily and whine about every small thing. Good to know

I think she was just pissed off because right now because she starts to get annoying questions from Dutch people why she wants black pete gone.
That she got a bad name because of some people that whine too much or that create crime and thereby also giving her a bad name. Something like that.

Im sorry but it is 2013. Blackface is NOT offensive. If the movie White Girls can be made and isnt offensive then neither is blackface, or at least thats my stance. Nor is Black pete. What a freakin joke.

I might as well speak from the other end(as an immigrant) and say that in no way do i find this tradition racist. if an immigrant finds a certain tradition or anything really offensive, they live with it or they leave. like for example, i HATE bonfire night with a passion, but i live with it. i HATE how schools here teach WW2, portraying themselves as the saviours of the Poles( far from truth) and ignore how a lot of the work was done by polish resistance, but i learn to live with it. i dont send complaints to the department of education telling them to stop teaching that.

What if its the tradition of burning those suspected to be witches, performing arrange marriages, treating women as property etc etc. you have no right to say anything just because its their tradition? That would lead the world down a dark path if we only followed long standing traditions with no modification to fit new found belief and realizations

Lep, you have a valid point

no one said you were offended

I was just trying to get your perspective on why someone can't paint their face to be a black character.

it still makes no sense but I agree with what you said. some will just be offended regardless at different things

those are different because a lot of the time it's those that were born there that are against, and therefore there is a right to interfere as the locals that were born there suffer and are against them.
