ok, so heres the deal, me and my brother are thinking about getting a black piranha (not sure of the latin name, but the ones with the red eyes) and we were wondering about tank size. one site said 40 gallons, and another said 180 gallons. please post your opinions.

you should have atleast a 75 for a black rhom with a width of atleast 18 inches but you can get away with a 40 long or 55 for a few years as they grow slowly

The fact that black serras grow an average of half an inch to barely 1 inch a year is what deters me from keeping one....I'd say a 180 with a full grown black would be impressive....Fill it with driftwood, leaving the center free to view it moving from one end to another....Keep the lights low, these fish are found in deep waters of the Amazon.....

some can get large, but if you are raiseing it from a small size it will take awhile to become a 16" monster, they grow 1"-2" per year if kept properly, if you have a rhom that is 8-11", then a 75 will do, anything bigger will need a 125, large blacks get cramped in anything smaller, and blacks do not get big enough to fill out 180's i have never seen one bigger than 18", and that was a rare case.

Save your money and get a 12"+ from one of the sponsors here....16 inch Peruvian will cost you $800, includes shipping.....Buying a fish this big will definately cut down on the many years you would be waiting for one to grow to such a size.....

That is half the fun of keeping them IMHO. I think it would be grat to look back on all those years and think about what you have done.
