the price for peal was always going to drop once they were captive bred on a larger scale

The same already happens with black rays. Therefore I agree with Alex that the prices for WC will be less than the current prices for captive breds. So I will wait a little bit longer.:)

at the very most you will be looking at is that WC will be $200-400 cheaper than CB

i know for sure i would rather spend that extra $$$$ on a ray i know for sure wont have a hook stuck in its gut and feeds from day one

rays are very very expencive pay the extra money to cut out the risk

I wish everyone Luck in acquiring their new Leos etc but I see too many people that think they know exactly what the prices will bottom out at. Nobody has any idea what the end price will be in a few seasons you have to let the market play itself out. I collect and breed ball pythons and have seen snakes I have paid 5000 for worth 500 within 3 years that were down from 40k 6 years back. Let the market play itself out.

My take is that the quotas are open again just like they were a few years ago, there were always quotas and there will always be quotas however you can bet that alot more rays will be shipped than the papers state are allowed. The shippers in Brazil have alot of nerve charging importers 500-1000 dollars for rays that they were charging 55 dollars for 3 years ago. The rays are no more rare or hard to get than there were, they have seen what the market will bear with the closure of the ray exports and are taking full advantage of it. The black rays became expensive because people wanted them and could not get them, now that they are available how do they justify charging only a lil less than a cb ray. 4-5 years ago I was offered cb Leo from a public aquarium from a middle man and from memory with everyones markup they would cost me 500 per ray I understand the price nowadays because they are not available and the breeding, overhead etc cost alot of money. I see the idea of selling wc rays from the river at 500-1000 as ridiculous and taking advantage of the market. Look at the FH market,,,,, does anyone remember the 40k dollar fh a few yrs ago that are now worth 300? or are they even worth that?

Does anyone know what the quota numbers for black rays were from the last 10 years?

I think it was somewhere around 3k a year?

First: It is not my target to buy a wild caught ray because of the probably lower price compared with captive bred ones. My target is to wait until the market price will decrease more and more due to the large amount of captive bred rays which will overflow the market. The market price will rule the price fore WC and CB rays. Then I would buy a black ray. I assume this may happen in one or two years only. So don't hurry and loose money.:)

Second: For me it is more reasonable to buy a captive bred ray (as long I can be sure that it is no hybrid) for the same reasons as you mentioned. ;)

You guys have fun waiting on this ray market to stabalize for the next 3 years. Ill be chilling in front of my tank relaxing watching these beautiful rays swim around, grow, and bond with me. Almost like a dog growing up with the family my son loves them.

If anything I see it going the other way but everyone has their opinion. In my honest opinion I dont think even the entire 5000 ray quota could satisfy Asia, therefore people would still be paying more to get their hands on them. More popcorn and waiting for few more months, we will all be obese by the time any of this shakes down!

You are all right its not going to happen over night this massive price drop everyone is hoping for

its going to take 2-3 years in which time you chould have brought your captive bred rays and bred them

it seams crazy that some people have have wanted black rays for so long but wont buy them because the price is so high

it brings me back to asian aros in the US you all want them but probably wont pay the price

its all about $$$$$$ at the end of the day but to go with out something just to save a few $$$$$ seams crazy

Youre right, its all about money.

Some people can afford a $1500 fish but when its their opinion that the price is unjustified they wait till it drops. Even if they have the money, its just not worth it to them.

Some people can afford a $1500 fish but are all about the hype so to them its worth it and they get them.

Some people simply cant afford a $1500 fish.

dont compare Asian Aros to rays its apples and oranges,,, In asia the FH was also the next asian aro,,,, remember? Some people buy into the hype and prices some dont. Its like showing up to buy a car thats worth 500 and 20 other Morons show up that are willing to pay 5000.... are you gonna sit there and bid along with them and overpay for a 500 dollar car?

I think the price with not go down or increase by much. Ray breeding is just too labour intensive and yield too few pups to make a huge difference unlike Luo Han.

This number quoted... would probably sell out on the spot in just China alone, where the market is pretty nuts...the rest the Taiwanese and Thai could hoard. Especially after those that die off during transport and disease.

$2-3 hundred temp drop is my guess.
