Blacks and Silver

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a community tank with rays, arowanas, eels, knifes, gar, cichlids, datniods, bichers, p bass, and a few other odd balls. 400 gallon 8x4x20'' I have 3 silver aroawans 30'' 28'' 25'' and 1 black about 22''. Ever night I can hear them splashing around but they seem peaceful whenever I watch the tank. Occasional nips but nothing that would make me concerned. These fish are thick and can take a few nips. I have had all four together for the last 15 months. They where raised in separate 180 gallon tanks till they reached around 18 inches. There is a lot going on in the tank and therefore I think they don't single each other out. I know its always suggested to keep them solo or three+. good luck.

If youre going to put 2 more 20" aros in with your silver, i hope
1)your tank is really big
2)youve got 2 spare tanks that are really big- just in case
why not more silvers? it might be your best bet- especially over the two aussies

i would wait till my 10'x10'x3' i build then try...i might do smaller aros with it to try first if they don't work then i would grow them out and try again, i like silvers, but i also like mix tanks, i might add a few silvers aswell it all depends on the prices at the time i go to do this, i always have a back up plan when i get fish as it is not fare to the fish to not;)...i like the look of the aussies and i think all the fish would compliment each other nicely...

An update for everyone- my original black that I raised since he still had some juvie coloration left, and I thought it was the most colorful black ever
picture.php

well... he got spooked by something (Im thinking it was the silver due to him being more active and a more agro feeder) and got past the screen and plexi that has been corralling them all in- he fell behind the tank and got between the sump and the wall- I got him out quick and gentle- but I got stuck in the stand- I had a buddy with me- so I passed the net to him- by the time he was safetly in the tank he had scales gone, his fins were beaten off(heheh beaten off) his barbells werent perfect anymore, and he lost the whole tail, the WHOLE TAIL!
So since I believed it was silver, he was banished to the pond in the backyard- and since I believe it was unintentional, he wasnt laying in the worm farm in the backyard- the gar was in a growth spurt so I put him in the pond at the same time-

But now I had to worry about having only 2 aros together- and they are fantastic!

Ive had fights and murders between different combination's of different arowanas- so I know its just a matter of time usually- but in this case Ill be surprised if it goes awry- especially considering the one was clearly worked over and traumatized from the fall, and now they are both healthy and strong- even trading the lead role back and forth- between each other

As for silver and the gar, the silver is only unhappy due to the pond being pellet fed, and hes trying to play hardball with me. The gar eats floating, sinking, and koi pellets- plus the big channel cats get dog food, and the gar takes that too
I wanted the black to keep his dignity so in the pics he had begun healing

for me: when my three silvers were small, they were very friendly to each other. now that they are approaching adult hood (almost 3' each), they seem to chase each other around the tank and circle each other in turns. never serious damage to any of them (fingers crossed it will continue to be so - imo, the other comm mates are their only deterents : 2 asian aros and 3 paimas seem to break up the fights)

i will be trying out black compatibility with other asian aros as soon as he is big enough ^^

Woww! That first pic is amazing! The colors are awesome. Nice job!

I like it alot too- the painted black bottom and back made the color really pop

the blacks are both 15" and about 1 1/2- 2 years old- Ill just have to see
There are 3 dats from 7-9" that hang down low with the 3x 12"- 14" polys so the aros hardly notice them

I had considered that also with an arowana I have overseas- but not only is it a green but its a pretty aggressive green, even with other fish- and not just silver or long fish- so even though the green is only 9"- 10"- it would definitely due harm( at least) to the twins

nice Jimbo! let me know if you want to get rid of that silver lookin to get an aro for my big tank so might start with a silver

ok Gino- youll be the first to know- and if I was a betting man, Id bet that youll want the gar too- it could be happening pretty soon too, because Im thinking about putting a breeding project in the pond now- I just have to figure out what would be a doable species thats worth the time and effort
