Blind cave tetras.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very nice. They seem to ave grown quite a bit, and looking great!
Thank you. My reaction to seeing how big they’ve gotten was screaming to my mom that they’re massive for a good 5 minutes lol. I was so excited to see them so big. The anchor catfish are doing well too but their numbers have lowered intensely from I think it was 6 to now I can only find 1. Also the bumblebee catfish are all doing good and have gotten pretty big as well

My brother had one of these in a community tank years ago, it definitely had no problem holding its own

Definitely a very different choice to neons or cardinals. My local pet store had some of these in a tank without the light turned on, which struck me as odd until I realized what fish were in it.

They’re such cool fish. They honestly get pretty big too. I know ever see tetras at like 1” but these guys have gotten to now the biggest being the size of a lighter. They’re massive little things

I agree that the bigger tetras/characins are pretty cool. Lighter size is decent heft for that type of fish, and is also big enough compared to species like neons to be safer with bigger fish as opposed to getting eaten (as happens to neons all too often).

Pink tail chalceus is another nice species of big tetra (IMO), it is to me what blind cave tetras are to you. I got reminded of the one I may get for my 2nd 473 liter (that is, if it leaves the loaches and Odessa barbs alone) when you mentioned big tetras.

Around 2010 these guys become extremely common for sale in my state(South Carolina) even big box stores would get them in. This lasted a couple years then I never really saw them for sale again. Still have not seen them for sale in person not even in the stores that get more interesting species in. Seem easy to order them online at least.

I was a kid at the time, and definitely not the best fish keeper. Yet these guys did well for me, and did well for my brother who was even worse with his fish.

I wonder what made them fall out of fashion? They are intriguing, easy to breed from what I understand, and sturdy. I mean when you compare them to a lot of other commonly available fish these guys make a lot more sense.
