blue spotted salamander

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow I didnt get any emails for the responses on this thread.

Ya its a blue spotted. Still alive to. Iv got a few leaves and "thick short sticks" in there for logs. wet sand for "land" and gravel for water. The water is about 1/3 of the area with the sand part being wettish, spends more time in the water though. I just put in 2 daddy long legged looking spiders in and 1 spider I saw that I didnt like and threw it in, probably the size of his head. Other than that, there have been slugs, flies, centipede in there. Wouldnt mind finding 1-2 more, have some buddies

You should try and purchase some wingless fruit flies to feed it. I use to breed them in test tubes in college. There's not much to it. I would avoid centipedes if you can because of their nasty bites. Would hate to have something bad happen to you salamander.

I've had one - feed it small to medium crickets, small worms, and the like. You won't see much of it, of course. Check your local laws, too. They are protected in many areas. I found one in southern NH a few years back.

Get rid of the gravel; so many people keep Tiger Salamanders on them... and a lot of them die from it.

Unfertilized dirt or coco fibre is better.

wet sand is not so good as a substrate, I would get rid of the water/gravel/sand and replace it with a coconut fiber bedding of some sort or an organic potting soil (no perlite or fertilizers), the salamander will be much happier. Also, the constant presence of live food items in the cage, especially a small one, can stress it out, especially if there is no way to burrow, so I would take those out too. Give it a small water dish and let it settle in for a day or two, then attempt to give it some small crickets or fruit flies again.

I assume you both mean the Eco-Earth stuff? Im just makin' sure, because a lot of people confuse it for Reptile Bark and similar stuff, which I dont think is good for anything. :)

Well I finally got around to moving him to a more suitable house.

I used eco earth, I got 3 bricks what a mistake that was, all I used was 1.

Blurry pic but thats one brick soaked in half gallon of water vs the 2 bricks still in the packaging. I never thought it would grow that much!

Dont laugh! No body told me it grows :(

He really seems alot happier now, hes all burrowed in now after looking at the fish tank next to him. I bet he didnt like knowing they could eat him in one gulp!
