Wild types are actually quite uncommon... I've never seen any for sale in any LFS. You'd probably have to go through Jeff Rapps--he has two different "wild" types right now.

it wasn't always that way, they're not popular anymore because more people prefer their flashy captive bred counterparts. don't get me wrong, i prefer the wild types myself but that doesn't mean i can't appreciate a morph.

as for my "common" comment; i meant that as a blanket statement for fish in general.

I don't know why all you Oscar lovers are in to that line bred BS when they have such nice wild coloration...

+1 the regular wild coloration is a lot nicer than any albino O.

Then why are the ugly captive bred tiger O's sold in such large quantities at places like Walmart and Petco? Many of the wild variants have a lot more color than the typical tiger oscars sold in chain stores...

i answered that in my post that you quoted. didn't you read it? i'm confused by your question.

Yes, actually I did read it. The part you highlighted is the part I was questioning. Your reasoning that people are attracted more to the more "flashy" fish would imply that the wild caught oscars should be more popular (since they have more color and thus, I'd expect, would be considered more "flashy").

Example: Which of these would you expect to be more impressive to an average person?

I believe what he's saying is, if people are more into "flashy" variants, why are the ugly-nonflashy variants so popular? you'd figure these wild variants?

All the stores have the same, plain variants

flashy is obviously a subjective term, meaning "brilliant and dazzling, esp for a short time or in a superficial way". bright red and yellow and white oscars, i would consider more "flashy" than the mostly earthy colored wild type oscars. what one person calls flashy, another may call boring or even offensive, loud or obnoxious. also, calling something "flashy" does not imply that it is more desirable or better looking.

i think you might be thinking that if it isn't flashy, it must be ugly; and that is not the case at all. why people prefer them over the wild types, that i couldn't tell you.

i didn't think i had to spell this out for you, that's why i was confused by your question. did i make what i meant clear to you now?
