The color will go away within a year..It is injected dye......I have recently read a coloumn on a brand new strain of dyed fish......The color is not injected, it is DNA placed in.......It is actually a glow in the dark type.......SShould be on shelves by mid 2012........

They have apparently done the same with Angels and Convicts as well, there was a thread about it on AC a while back with a link to an article about it. It did say they should be available to the public by 2012 and as crazy as this may sound I think the article said they achieved the glow in the dark effect by encoding genes from jellyfish and corals into their dna.

Continuation of this dying process is sad to hear.

Genetically altering the DNA of a fish is scary to me. Are these fish sterile? What happens if they are released and this altered DNA is introduced to the wild? In 50 years are all fish in the wild going to glow in the dark?

Yeah it is a terrible thought to me as well. Hopefully it will prove to be nothing but a cheap novelty without any staying power.

Here is the original thread from AC for those of you interested http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=230389

read this it explains a lot about it but they were originally created to be released into the wild and detect pollutants in water.

it is true its dna from jellyfish. and they are not sterile because they state the originals were altered long ago and all the ones available today are offspring from the original so its a bunch of inbred glow in the dark freaks of nature that most people find "cool!" or "cute!"

as to the OP blue oscars are dyed and sometimes tattooed and very inhumane as previously said. its sad that your local fish stores would support such a horrible market. none of mine would go near it.most people around here have never even heard of dyed or tattooed fish. thats horrible too. picture what peta or other animal groups would do if people was shaving dogs and tattooing patterns onto them. thats basically what they are doing to these fish.
