My moms having trouble maintaining a 40g due to the stock so I’ve been trying to clean it out and recycle it with good water and thinking of buying her a bonsai flowerhorn to pay her back for the tanks and fish she’s bought me in the past. Would a 40g be big enough for a bonsai to live in for life.

I would personally say 55 minimum. It is a short body fish, but it doesn’t know that. It would ideally need the space of a larger flowerhorn.

So it wouldn’t be able to be a solo 40g wet pet? Maybe with 1 or two killifish too.

She loves the colors of FH but doesn’t want something as big as a FH and loves the faces of blood parrots but hates the color of them so I thought a bonsai would be perfect

I’d wait for a more experienced flowerhorn keeper to chime in to be definitive. Might just be me overestimating their needs.

I wouldn’t even think about fh tankmates. Usually ends poorly.

Good alternatives are convicts, rainbows, nanolutaes, hrps, acaras, and jewel cichlids (similar colors to flowers). All have great personalities.
Nothing else with the screwed up parrot face...

Why not like different kind of parrots? Like the panda ones or striped ones.
All of them are just short body convicts.
Only ever heard of bp
Lots of parrot hybrids out there. Most well known are the Kirin parrot (fh x bp), King Kong parrot (functional parrot - basically a Midas), and rose queen (same as above except pink/purple). All have normal mouths and are fairly large (too mug for tank).
It’s not impossible to keep a bp in 40 gallons, but I’m sure they would much rather larger. FINWIN FINWIN has a few in separate 37 gallons, but plans on moving them around to larger tanks.

I’m looking at getting my mom a Kirin ( I think, is that what a bonsai is?)
