I'd say if it's a 40g breeder tank, it would work with a kirin flowerhorn or short body. Plenty of space front and back plus side to side. Haha. 55gl are the worst. It's too thin front to back but have the length in my opinion.
I think that 55g should be wider front to back lol

The 40s are 18” wide but only 36” long. Is why 75 gallons are usually preferred. Best of both (40 and 55). We just bought a 90 for our FH so she has the upper swimming space too.
My 40 is a standard 12” wide. And my 55 is also 12” maybe a couple more inches but still I think it’s stupid that it’s this thin

Oh interesting. I’ve always thought the breeders were desired cause of their wide footprint. Never owned one. Though currently Petco has a 50% off sale near me so that may change!

Only recently learned about footprints. Honestly never knew there were “breeder” tanks until this year after I already had my 40g and when I got my 55g I had no other choice, my grandma bought it as a gift so it was this or nothing.

For a fh it will be a tight fit. Get a convict or a rainbow cichlid.
Or maybe a Santa parrot, if it's available .

I’ve owned a rainbow cichlid before but passed from ich in its gills. Wasn’t very colorful but had good personality
I'd say get a good convict male ( pick the most dominant of the group) and grow it out, he'll be a beast . I've seen some good old beast of a convict here on mfk.
Don't remember when I took a screenshot but something like this.
