I honestly recommend no less then a 60g tall for a FH of any kind. It gives em plenty enough space to turn around comfortably without coming into contact with glass. For a 40g breeder tank I would recommend getting a convict cichlid, atleast if your looking for an aggressive wet pet. They get to roughly 4-6in depending on gender and have all the attitude of a large cichlid. I would also so no to tank mates as they will most likely die at some point.I’d wait for a more experienced flowerhorn keeper to chime in to be definitive. Might just be me overestimating their needs.

I wouldn’t even think about fh tankmates. Usually ends poorly.
Good alternatives are convicts, rainbows, nanolutaes, hrps, acaras, and jewel cichlids (similar colors to flowers). All have great personalities.
Nothing else with the screwed up parrot face...
