Bought something called "Neon Dwarf Texas Cichlid". Whose fault are these things?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My guess is a cull from a BP X FH breeding. You should test out the tail to see if its genetic. IF its a reccessive gene you wouldn't see anything in the first generation but if it is truely a recessive gene it will show up in 2nd generation with 25% of them showing the trait. It could be a codominant or dominant trait though. Its most likely just the result of a former tail injury though haha.

Found a clone online! This guy http://gregthecrazyfishguy.wordpress.com/2012/01/03/genetics-of-the-blood-parrot-cichlid/ spawned red devil with blood parrot and got

That looks practically identical. While I understand the variability of gene expression (especially in hybrids), I'm pretty astounded nonetheless to have potentially found the ID.

Make sure you scroll down to the bottom of the post for the current pictures of my devil parrots. None of them still have stripes; they've all peeled or faded to orange by now. Some have some white patches along with the orange, and one or two still have some traces of their baby colours, but the stripes are definitely all gone. I expect they'll all be totally orange (or orange with white patches) by the time they're fully grown.

Have you considered this fish might have festae (true red terror) in its ancestry? This would explain the stripes, pearls, and reds. Mo Devlin has a great gallery here: http://www.aquamojo.com/festae.html See what you think. Festae have an upper-half-only caudal spot and 'Y' stripe pattern behind the head, but are definitely more red and pearly than false red terrors/Mayans.

Thanks for posting Greg I have been enjoying your devil parrot experiment as well as your convict color morph breeding for a long time.

Well, my guy has stopped growing at 3", so the "dwarf" part is ringing true...
