I went to the store and bought two senegals today. They are from Petsmart. They are both in a QT tank with a large piece of driftwood for hiding, a heater, and a AC20 turned on "low" since I saw one of them get his little pectoral fin stuck, then his tail fin stuck to the intake :(

I made a top out of a wood frame with screening material over top of it. There are no gaps, so I know they won't be able to get out. I noticed they both had a bit of fin damage, so I lightly salted the tank with 2 tablespoons of plain salt.

I have their tank covered with a dark blanket to help them settle in, any idea how long I should keep them covered, and when I can start staring at them for hours on end without bothering them? LoL. I love these guys, I've already named them Bert and Ernie.

Welcome to the world of polypterus. Congratulations :P

Honestly if they have somewhere to hide you can probably take the blanket off after a few hours, i'd leave the lights out for a while though. feed em some high protein foods and they'll be growing quick before you know it

very tough little guys should be settled and ready to eat by morning. i warn you i looked at my sen for hours and ended up with a poly tank. enjoy

Pics pics :)

The first pic is of Bert. The second two pics are of Ernie. Bert is a little bit bigger, and lighter in color. Stupid flash was on the first pic I took, hope it didn't stress the little guys out too much :(

I've dropped in some small pieces of frozen krill. I hope they eat

Mine even better, I drop a few bloodworms in the bag on the 3 hour way home. they started to eat already...

I've tried a few things. Last night I dropped in some shrimp pellets, this morning I tried some gel food. I've left them covered for some security too. And, as stated earlier, I had tried krill, but they left that alone too, so I took it out because I don't want to foul the water.

The second one seems more interested in food, but doesn't actually eat it, just nudges it with his nose, and leaves it alone. That one was in a tank full of blood worms, though, and they have both pooped since I've had them. I'm not worried yet.

Congrats on the new Polys:) They should adjust fine. They are very hardy fish. You can keep trying the Bloodworms. If one of them is nudging the worms, it'll just be a matter of time. Just let them starve for a day...that usually does the trick for me.

be careful with shrimp pellets as small as they are, my buddy had a 4" del choke to death on one, got caught in his throat weird
