There are several threads on bowfin here: http://forum.nanfa.org/index.php?showforum=62

They are not common fish in captivity and you will almost certainly never see one at your LFS. There are some online vendors who carry them occasionally; check with the vendors listed here: http://forum.nanfa.org/index.php?showforum=220 as well as Sach's: http://www.aquaculturestore.com/. It doesn't look like anyone has them now, but some of those vendors may get some in the spring.

I believe they occur in parts of NJ; check with your DNR's regulations to see if they are legal to take and keep.

This is a common fish where I live and I am fairly familiar with them in the wild. I have kept juveniles but not adults in captivity. They are aggressive predators and should not be kept with smaller fish, but in a big enough setup they may be kept with other large fish (bass, big cats, gar, etc). They are not picky about water parameters or temperature. They like lots of cover.

I would plan on at least a 180 gallon tank for long term care of one fish, with a footprint at least 24" in the smallest dimension. Bigger is of course better.

I tried to pm you but not sure if you know how to use the private messages yet-anyway,I do have a nice pike for sale if you are interested.thats the closest you will get to a snakehead-other than a bowfin but i personally haven't seen them anywhere.

bowfin are agressive, and they get up to two feet, so you're going to need a big tank

Also, not to turn you away from bowfin-if you can find one and get a big enough tank, go for it-but have you checked out bichirs? They are somewhat similar to snakeheads, but are legal and some species are much smaller (so wont need a huge tank) and readily available. Check out the Polypterus section here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=108

Not trying to talk you out of a bowfin (I plan on getting one myself eventually), but if you can't get one for whatever reason, bichirs might be an alternative
