yeah, mine is pretty skittish as well. he's around 7-8 inches.
If I move in close to inspect him he may dash around the tank.He got a good gash on his head from doing this once before. What do you feed yours?

yo krichardson i feed him anything lol
i usually feed a mix of hikari carnivore, cichlid bio-gold, krill, silver sides, and shrimp.

YEAH! mine does that too if you get to close to him he dashes from one side of the tank to another. it annoys me lol i want him to stay perfect without any injuries or cosmetic imperfections haha.

Yup same here.Luckily the wounds heal and clear up really fast.

Thought I would post an update on his condition. He is doing great, swims at the top a lot, but alive! Eating flakes and bloodworms. But now I've got an issue...I threw in a few Cory fish to clean up the tank a bit, they have been laying eggs for the past two hours... over 200 eggs, my guess, and still going... I gave up counting at 120, lol. I just hope the Bowfin doesn't eat them all... but then again... over 200 eggs... lol. I'll try to get some pics posted in the photo lounge.

Want to revive this thread good to see he is doing well.. I am looking to purchase a Bowfin as well =) Definetly not a problem in Louisiana... but I was thinking if one would go well with my Dat's.. I have 5 Indo's all around 4inches atm.. If I get a smaller bowfin I will definetly grow him out a lil before putting him in the larger 240g tank... but man I want one =) I am finding trouble with finding actual good tankmate info on them... any suggestions?

you should not get a 1 incher, they are fragile at that size, and often times are infested with parasites or suffer from idiopathic death.

Is it just me or does anyone else notice the similarity between a bowfin and snakehead?

besides their air breathing capabilities and body shape, there are barely any similarities. Bowfin have a round head shape compared to the flattened; pointy head of a sh. In addition, a bowfin's anal fin is quite small while the snakehead's is long and is about half the length of its body. their pelvic fins are located in different areas, and their jaw shape is tottally different.
