I think we the consumer have been short changed! This is a serious allegation of mis-representation. Last month I bought this tank (no label tho) off CL & when I set it up & bucket filled 2 at a time (using 1gal plastic milk containers) I found it only to be 60-62 gal. Now thinking I somehow mis-counted & how can this standard sizing be short by 10gal. So I blame myself.

72 gal 48" x 18" x 22" Black

But now that I do water changes & still do the old fashion 2 at a time fill up (I do siphon out the debris/water with a JBJ) I take out about 12 gal. & I physically measure the water line initially, when it drops & when I refill. By refilling 12 gal jugs it hits the same lines.

Now empiracally for those mathematicians - if I measure the changes in inches vs. the total height of the tank (assuming the bow ness remains constant from top to bottom) - I can measure only 5 parts in change which x 12 gal. is 60gal.

Now I am more sure that what is advertised & what is calculated

http://animal-world.com/encyclo/information/calculate.htm#Aquarium Volume Calculator

is incorrect. I used 15" width as an avg for bow front calculates 68gal.

I don't suppose anyone else has encountered this?

I will write to those companies that produce these tanks to inquire & then complain.

But can I be that off to lose 10gal??!! :irked:

Can you a 5th grader get the same results? Yes i say!!

You also need to take into account the amount of substrate and decor that you have and the fact that companies rate the gallonage based on the outside dimensions of the glass.

I would agree with you. But mines is a bare bottom tank with a sponge filter, 1 decorative ornament & 1 driftwood. So if I had to guess I would say they together displace at most a gallon.

but are you serious how they rate gallonage? not by true holding tank volume?

so are you to say that gallonage will be 10-15% less than what they are suppose to be?

this doesn't sound copasetic.

but I am perturbed that I thought I had 72 but really it's a 62.

yeah i think i read somewhere that they base the size off of how many gallons of water the tank would displace if placed into a larger container of water. not sure how accurate that is so....

none of our tanks hold as much water as the common nic name suggests... a standard 125 gal (72 x 18 x 21) holds at most 112 US gallons... and the outside measurements come out to 117 US Gallons...

I agree it is dishonest...

Now go measure the flow rates on your filters and let us know howe made that makes you ;)

Ya gotta love it when the manufacturers don't have to answer to anyone...

but sometimes it goes the other way too.

eg. Aqueon calls their 72x24x24 tank a 180g (based on OUTSIDE dimensions)

but for some reason, they base their 150g and 210g on the INSIDE dimensions.

so keeping things consistent, their 150g (72x18x29.5) and 210g (72x24x29.5) should really be called a 165g and 220g respectively to keep things consistent when comparing these sizes to everything else out there...

works in our favor for these two sizes actually, since price wise their 150g is the same as everyone elses, yet its 2.5" taller or about 15g more. for the same price. everyone elses 150 is 27" tall, not 29.5 tall. yay.

yep its a bunch of BS

they should call the tanks what they will actually hold inside them or atleast be very close

I assume you probably could have squeezed a few more gallons in if you filled it to the point of overflowing?

It is BS I feel...and it also can mess up most people adding meds to the tank. On my 240gal its more like 217gal. If your dosing a tank for 240gallons with something that says dont overdose....you end up overdosing. Maybe not so much that it kills everything...but it does mislead the consumer I think. Since we talking about missleading the consumer...whats up with the darn fast food joints. On TV that burger is all nice n fluffy with some ripe juicy red tomatos and fixins. Then you get it and it looks like some fat ass in the back sat on it to heat it up and then jamed there thub through it for ****s-n-giggles lol. Ok rant over.....
