BowFront Volume/Gallons Shortage? Not really 72gal?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
doubtful. because when I got my Aqueon 150 it was sitting on a skid right beside a perfecto 150 and the Aqeon tank was noticably taller. the top frame fits overtop of the glass flush with the edge. its not like both tanks have 27" glass panels but the aqueon tank has the trim that sits 2.5" on top of that..thats not how the trim sits.

having said that, your perfecto tank may have had different dimensions than current perfecto tanks, because Marineland took them over a few years ago and have made some changes to the tanks. eg. they all have bevelled front edges now etc.

even Aqueon's 150 is different now, because most measurements listed for the 150 when they were using the Allglass name list a height of 28", not 29.5.

again, a slight change was probably made..

which works out in our favor as aquarists.

even aqueons site says the 150 is 72x18x29,

actually, they go by the overall outside dimensions including the trim in all three dimensions:

http://www.aqueonproducts.com/assets/011/19784.pdf

if you punch in these numbers into a calculator, you get a tank bigger than 150g in this case, but they must lable based on the inside dimensions for this size tank.

which is actually accurate to what it actually holds for once.

however, relative to other manufacturer's '150g' tanks, theirs is bigger because it is taller..

hence, why I bought one :)

Is there actually a gallon mark on your milk jugs or are you just estimating it?

hey brian, I actually used a measuring cup as I wanted to be sure my gal. jugs were as they should be. it's over by 3ozs. if filled to the brim.

so if I actually fill them to the brim & put in 60 jugs x 3oz = 180oz / 128oz(1gal) = 1.3 gal possibly xtra added.

& my substrate is bare bottom so little displacement there.

so where do we stand now? some measurements are outside, some inside glass, some include trim some do not.

whether I use measurements or not, I still bought what I thought was a 72gal bow but it comes out to 62gal of filled water by jug.

try this link someone passed on to me:

http://www.bestfish.com/tips/052198.html

so if I fill up a 72gal bow front tank totally bare bare bare naked babe babe babe & all air air air - with 1gal milk container jugs & I get to 63 to the top of the rim brim trim - does this mean my 72gal BF needs to grow up!

or as others have told me I should 'relax' 'get a grip on reality' 'accept a 5% shortage tolerance level" "it's an accepted retail wide that actual results are not the same as mfr's claims" "making a mountain out of a molehill"

yeah I guess so. doesn't mean tho I am a satisfied consumer!

i have had this thought before aswell but now i say IT DOESN'T MATTER.

if your fish are doing well in that 105 gallon tank named a "125gal". ITS FINE. does the tank look good to you? do your fish like it? can your fish move comfortably in the tank for life?

if you answer yes to all 3 then your tank serves its purpose as the big glass house that it is.

or MAYBE milk jugs are actually more than a gallon ;). ever think of that?

different things matter to different peoples. some people value honesty in a company they deal with, while some only value results.

the one thing that could be off is that you potentially overdose all your medicines in the tank.

i would be inclined to say its a possibility that the milk jugs are wrong, however im more inclined to disagree that they are over a gallon, as that would be a net loss for a company. one or two jugs doesnt seem bad but when you fill thousand a day over time the revenue losses would be significant, and more then likely cost a bit of grief to management;)....... :grinno:

O so true!! & many who comment & critique & doubt you don't consider this intangible factor.

the one thing that could be off is that you potentially overdose all your medicines in the tank.

O yep, I agree.

O Well, I just measured 3 of my jugs - so get this! one is 4oz over, one is 5oz over & another is 3oz over! who woulda thunk??!!

so I will have to state categorically that buying milk in those 1gal plastic containers you get more than what you're paying for!!! for once no "shrinkage" like those potato chips, soup cans, pasta sauces, etc. etc.

Oh - who says I sounded like rihanna??!! them's fighten words!!

:=)
