Bowing stand 125g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just built me a stand for my 125. Total cost came to around $110. I used doubled vertical 2x4's and 1/4" plywood to finish it with. Wasn't to hard to make.

I love how simple and awesome that looks. I think I'll jump on making this right away with the vertical 2x4 design.

The sag in the middle doesn't surprise me at all. Deformation in structures due to shear forces are minute in comparison to the deformations caused by internal moments. In a simple case (similar to a fish tank on a stand) the tank places a uniform distributed load across the boards. The greatest bending moment occurs right in the center or the structure (assuming there is a single uniform distributed load across the structure and the supports are on the ends of the supporting structure). This is the logic behind placing some 2x4's in the center of your stand for additional support.

One last note: Far too often I see stands that have no diagonal braces. Diagonal braces shouldn't come into play unless the stand encounters a lateral load (like you bump it when you're cleaning it). So if you ever decide to make a new stand, consider adding some small diagonal braces!

thanks cor....I was very satisfied on how the stand turned out. I think it really surprised my wife that it didn't end up looking like crap :grinno:

If you have any questions about building a stand, just let me know.
Also, there are alot of good stand plans online.

Zennzzo...!

Thanks for bring some real clairity to this post.....!!!!!!!

Welded Steel... yum!

mm

PS/ Hey zennzzo.. how is that stand of yours coming...?

I have some family comming for easter so I hope I can get the frame built by the weekend so they can help me move the tank after it is empty. I can than spend the weekend trying to figure out how to evenly cut the plywood or some type of vanier with a circular saw.

I used a cheap jig saw ($15) to cut my plywood. The edges weren't perfect, but that is what trim is for :)
