Brackish Water Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is absolutely no reason to cycle a tank with fish in this day & age. You can fishless cycle a tank in a week to 10 days: http://www.**************.com/forum/library/water-filtration/fishless-cycling/

I wanna try it with a fish...Well I guess maybe not with a Puffer , but with some sort of stupid fish I really dont care too much about..Maybe like a few Danios or some sort of cheap fish that can tolerate many different water conditions....

its your tank and you can do with it as you please.

you cant ignore pufferpunks 7 10 day cycle though. thats lightning quick. you could have a setup tank by this time next week if you start now. :)

good luck anyway. let us know how things turn out.

Yeah Im just trying to get rid of my goldfish in the 30 gallon tank in order to free it up for the Brackish fish. But nobody wants to buy my 3 Orandas , 1 Koi and 1 Comet! I dont wanna just feed them to the Largemouth Bass. I guess if by this friday nobody buys them , I'll just donate them to the LFS. Im gonna get rid of my 12 Inch Channel Cat. He's in my 75 Gallon tank and I think its time for him to go somewhere bigger. I tried posting him on here on MFK but nobody wants to Adopt him nor pay the shipping. So I may have to donate him to the same LFS.

I sort of overcrowded my 75 Gallon tank with too many monster native fish. So now Im cutting down and keeping it to a Bluegill and my largemouth bass and a spotted sunfish. I was thinking about giving them away and turning my 75 G tank into a brackish tank , but my girlfriend loves the Largemouth Bass and the Sunnies. She likes to hand feed the Bass and the Bluegill.:grinno:

So they are gonna stay for now....I guess sometime in the future I'll get rid of them when they outgrow the tank and I'll convert my 75 Gallon tank into a Brackish tank. Im currently using an Eheim 2217 on the 75 Gallon tank. Someone told me at the LFS that If I convert one day my 75 into a brackish tank that I need to get a protein skimmer....Im not sure what that is? But is it necessary? Or can it be done without it?

Skimmer won't work until you get to a SG of 1.018-20--practicaly SW.

So I had a change of heart and I am turning my 75 gallon into a brackish tank!!!!!!!!!!!! :headbang2

I figured it was time to get rid of the native fish since I cant accomodate their growth.

Well anyways! So I stick to the same plan and raise the SG 1.002 a week in order to not kill the bacteria.

Im probably gonna ape sh*t and buy a lot of fish. Can I throw in some figure 8 puffers, scats, archers & gobys?

i would be careful not to overstock again, scats and archers get pretty big. My 75gal looks small to me already with just 3 scats 1 mono 2 sailfin mollies and 3 eels.

Ok. So whats good then? Maybe just 1 of each? Like 1 Scat, 1 Archer, 2-3 Figure 8's, a few bumble bee gobys or knight gobys?

imo that would be a good number of fish, i couldnt tell you how theyd get along in a 70. one other thing to consider is that some brackish fish need higher sg's as they age (scats for sure) progressing all the way to full marine in adulthood. others dont need this. i think the puffers are optimaly at 1.005 but dont quote me i dont keep em.
i personally would choose if you want a tank that is eventually going to be a high end brackish/marine or a steady sg and choose fish accordingly. just my 2 cents
