Brackish Water Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great idea. Research before you buy so you don't have to pay for it later.
I'm glad you dropped the dragon goby. I personally don't think a 75 gallon tank would be big enough for one if you took proper care of it.
I think bumblebee gobies would be incompatible with scats, because scats need a higher salinity, and bumblebees require a low one. And, aren't archer fishes predators? More importantly, predators that may get a foot long. I don't think bumblebees would last long with them.
I hope everything goes well with your tank.

Yes, F8s prefer a SG of 1.005 & adult scats, marine.

Ok. So whats good then? Maybe just 1 of each? Like 1 Scat, 1 Archer, 2-3 Figure 8's, a few bumble bee gobys or knight gobys?

how about an archer only tank? its just an idea.... like i said its your tank:) maybe 3 or less?

how tall is your 75? have you thought about a paludarium set up? you could leave the water level a good few inches below the top of the tank, usually 1/2 to 3/4 full, and have an air gap with some sticks/rocks/bogwood sticking out of the water. put crickets in and watch the archers earn their food, as aposed to just being fed...

or you could go all the way like a member on here did. check out this thread if you haven't already. its an amazing setup.

i think archers are great fish. i had two moths in my room last night, i turned of the room light and just opened the lid. the moths are attracted to the light, and the archers shot them down from about 18", even though they are only 2" long.

its amazing to watch, they are little monsters, even at this juvenile size.:headbang2

Well I was thinking about possibly keeping 1 oe 2 Archers in my tank. According to my research, Figure 8 Puffers can tolerate conditions from 1.0005-1.010.

Archers tolerate SG levels of 1.010-1.015

Therefore, I think within the range of 1.010 I can establish a successful tank with both 1-2 archers and some Figure 8 Puffers.

Now in regards to Bumblebee Gobys, would the archer fish evenutally eat them? Has anyone kept the 2 species together in peace without aggression?

I am also considering 1-2 Knight Gobys and maybe some 1-2 Orange Chromides.

What do you guys think? Can I pull it off?

Well i was just reading now that archers get kinda big...So maybe the Archer idea is no good.

But pretty much Im gonna stick to small species brackish water fish like knight goby, orange chromide, bumblebee gobby and some Figure 8's.

Oh yeah I had another question....Do you guys know any web sites or vendors here on MFK that sell quality Brackish water fish? Im afraid of junky LFS in the area that throw all the fish in one holding tank in order to get rid of them you know. I dont need to be wasting money on an expensive fish to find out that its not doing good because of the improper care.

Any suggestions?

Now that sounds like a great combo! Add knight gobies & dragon gobies to that list. I have artricles written on dragons & F8s in the Library at my forum. You should read them.

I've heard that knight gobies will kill bumblebee gobies. Have you kept them together Pufferpunk?
If we're talking about a 75 gallon tank, I wouldn't go with one dragon goby, let alone dragon gobies (plural). They get seriously territorial when they hit the ten inch mark. Mine keeps attacking me when I'm working in his tank. It's strange that he attacks me, and not guppies or BBGs, so I think it's territoriality and not predation.

DGs actually do quite well in groups of 3 or more. I can't imagine a mostly blind fish attacking anything. Maybe he thinks you're something to eat? Is he getting enough ot eat?

I have kept knights & BBGs together. Knights do have a rather large mouth though.

OK maybe the aggression would be more spread out with three or more, but can you really imagine three adult dragon gobies 15+" in a 75 gallon tank?
Let me make something very clear. Violet gobies are not blind. My goby displays his fins to me when I'm outside of the tank. He sees me and tries to keep me out of his territory. His fat little but is getting plenty to eat. If he was enough of a predator to attack my hand and arm, my brightly colored bumblebee gobies would probably be dead by now. If he was hunting me, why would he run up and hold his fins out at me before lunging at me?
I wasn't sure about the knights and bumblebees. It might be an interesting, but potentially tragic experiment. I wouldn't risk it.
