Breeding Bullheads

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
QUOTE=divemaster99;7132579]As much as I'd LOVE to score a nice 500 gallon, or even 300 gallon. My local craigslist and even the ones close to me are crap and never turn up any good deals on tanks, just 125s for $600 each. And the vast majority of my local fish stores are incredibly overpriced on tanks. My favorite LFS and the the one with amazingly good prices is closed for a month or two because one of the owners was stealing money which needs to be tracked down to get the bills paid so the store can get running again. I've looked at glass cages but they're to expensive after you account for delivery and I'm not driving to TN for a tank I'm already paying over a grand for. So where do you guys get your big tanks for good prices at?[/QUOTE

Monster ones, yes. I got one from this lake last July at 3.5-4" and he's about 9" now. Growth has really slowed down since 8". It'll be a few years before they achieve 12" if they ever do, 12" was actually the biggest bullhead I've ever caught and I fish for them all the time all over the place from spring through summer.

Just upgraded what I thought were going to be my bloodstock trio to their new home, a 20 high (24"x12"x16") from their old 10 gallon bin. Took measurements and they're all ~4" so they are finally starting to grow. I can definitely tell they're from a southern wholesaler and they have very unusual coloration with weak brown and pink with some yellow splotches and black patches. I still doubt they'll be breeding size by this summer, though.

Sorry I didnt reply last time got busy but good luck on your bullheads and future plans also keep making videos I really enjoy watching your videos.

I catch 12-13" one allllll the time at the dams and streams up here man haha. as for the tanks in the area, you just gotta keep your nose down for good deals on craigslist....unfortunately our area is stupid for tanks...people selling 55gal setups for like $400...so dumb. I scored that 310 mostly by accident haha, the lady listed it as "fish tank for sale" so I messaged her and she said it was 300 gallons, then I asked what she wanted and she told me she paid 500 for it, offered 300 and she took it lol.

Got my drylock, styrene, tools and everything all ready to go for this weekend. Going to sculpt the background for the 75 but I'm still waiting to hear back on some bullheads as to wether or not they're black or brown.

Local farm store has some 100gal stock tanks on sale apparently, might snag one of those for later now that the weather is starting to warm up a bit.

Granted, I live more south, but I haven't seen any spawning at less than 10+/-. The ones I have are yellow Bullheads. I have a TON of them between 3-7" if anyone wants to try them though. Good luck. All the ones I've kept in aquariums before got really tame, really fast.

that may be a good idea, tanks around here are expensive but those bins are NEver more than $1 per gallon. And a 180 bin would hold a half dozen adult bullheads for a while.
