Just wondering if there is a better fish for breeding for live foods for big SA cichlids

Red wiggler worms (AKA composting worms) are much faster and easier to culture than fish. They're safe, nutritious and super-easy to culture (basically a rubbermaid bin).

Make sure you get the right type of worms, I was reading recently in another forum and apparently red wrigglers used in composting are not only unappealing to many fish, but are also toxic.

Why not feed pellets and supplement with frozen foods?

I agree, get them on nls my old jag grew best while on pellets. Live foods only as good as what there fed. So youd have to feed them a quality pellet essentially gut loading. You could just feed them the quality pellet directly youll get better colouration too. There less aggressive when you dont feed live too.

Okay cool convicts are the go then, awesome. I's got millionz.. lol. (Ali g) but yeah nah i dont wanna feed my prize parachromis worms. I lost a bloody wicked thread fin from just 1 worm.! He done a fluro green stool witch was very bizarre!? Then in just minutes he swan into everything viciously! Within 2 days he was completely blind, deaf and dumb (dead!) On the third note im not gunna deprive my pure predator his right to hunt.

Clearly they've been so unappealing and toxic that I've been feeding them for many years ;)

I got my most recent group from Uncle Jim's worm farm about 3-4 years ago...

Yeah, I'm not saying it's gospel, just an interesting read:

Eisenia fetida Is the species in question, apparently they secrete a fluid that makes them less palatable. I guess if they are eaten quickly they taste fine

Evidently the ones that I've been culturing for years from two different sources (the last from Uncle Jim's: https://unclejimswormfarm.com/) are palatable.

I have literally fed the red wigglers from my bin just about every week for the last several years without incident. Yet to find a fish that doesn't like them.

I feed smaller worms or break larger worms into pieces for smaller fish.
