Making money breeding fish is difficult at best. If compatable pairs are simple to identify and easy to breed then you can be sure that 100 other people are doing it and that the price per fish...when they can be sold ...is going to be really low.

Additionally is fairly easy to saturate your available market once you have everything set up correctly and producing. Commercial breeders make up for this by shipping to other areas. That's difficult to do in a home situation.
yea i think my best bet is to pray my reds breed, i know i can make money on them, especially in my area

setting out to make profit from breeding is a sure way to get frustrated and fail.Get the fish you like, care for them as they should be cared for and they will breed.Selling fry is a bonus.

I dont know what the hell the other guy is talking about:screwy:
Buy 4 nice discus, once 2 pat off, try to get fry
Or buy Uaru, they sell for $5-$10 each at quarter size
Look at good quality Angel fish, Koi's always bring good money

If you want easy to breed don't go with Discus, they need lots of WC and lots of feeding they would cost you more than you made at the other end especially is you want to sell them small. Also a 55g would be too big when the fry hatched they would get lost in a tank that size.

Based on the experience I've had breeding with 20+ tanks I can say for certain that unless you have 20+ tanks as well you probably wont be making much profit. It's feasible to make 20 - 50 on a batch of whatever you choose but the problem is you wont be churning out a batch every month. You'd need more space and so the slippery slope begins to get more slippery and eventually you live in a 2 bedroom apartment with a sofa, tv and 25 fish tanks! If I had to be perfectly honest, I'd say grab some livebearers of various types, throw them in and when you want money reach in and net out some adults then put them up for sale wherever it's legal for you to do so or take them to a lfs that will give you cash money.

Good luck!

The first thing to do would be to find out what your coustomers need.
Needs change with location, season, fads and competition with other business.

The way to find out what your coustomers need is to ask them.
(Pet stores/pet brokers) In my experence they will be willing to
give you discount prices and special advice on your breeding stock
and set up costs.

I think youll find out that they need rats and mice.

But if you wont to stick to fish there are a few things to think about.

1. If you wont to make money at this your goal is to............

Turn fish food into fish!

Nothing exciting about it its basic math.

2. You don't have to use fish aquairums anything that will hold water and not have
any toxic compounds on them will work. Trash cans, storage containers, heavy
cardboard boxes with plastic liner. Take a walk through Wal-Mart.
If you need 5 gallon sizes you can find 5 gallon plastic food grade containers
behind most resturants for free.
(You do need to test the container before you buy more than one.
It is possoble for the plastic to have a toxic coating but I have found that even if
it does you can wash it off and still use it)

3. Don't buy anything in bulk till you HAVE to.

I own 2 busniness (An auto repair shop and a catering service)
And I can't even remember how many times I have bought large
quanities of something trying to increase my proft margin and ended
up throwing most of it away because demand changed. I wouldent
buy in bulk till I could figgure out to the day how long it would take
to use what I bought.

4. It's still work!

Its not magic its WORK. You will be able to figgure out how much you make an hour.
And that figgure wont be a good one at least not at first.

5. I would look into making my own fish food if its not a sensitive type of fish
I have made fish food out of baby food and ground fish there are sites on the
internet that tell you how just use google.

Good Luck!

dude, forget breeding fishes, and sale it for nothing, also it will take months to get babies selling size, if u wanna make some extra money do what i do:
make an ebay account and paypal, maybe u already have , and start buying GSM cell phones, and sale it back on e bay or craigslist, i have doing this for about 3 year now, i just spent 1 hour almost every day after my workon my free time, , i am buying and selling phones on ebay, like last month i put 2500$ to my bank account, atlees i made 1500$ from that sales, only thing u haven to lear lot about gsm phones and some time buy whole sales and fix some ofthem or get parts from them, i am sure u can find lot of good deals buying gsm phones, beacuse outthere lot of peole doesnt know how much worth the phones and they sale it half prices, what u doo buy it and sale it for regular or some time for more much money, like last month i bought whole sale 13 phones for 350$ and i already sold 3 of them for more than 350$ and i still have 10 more phones for sale and i am sure i can sale them more than 800$, like another last week i got phone 180$ and i sold it 3 day later for 320$ u see, u can makes some money without do anything, just spent hour on the pc. i am saying u breedign fishes or having fish tanks for hobby only, u can not make money with breeding fishes, maybe some, but not like selling phones, also u will be using the best phones everytime, like me i have the best phone on the market and i got it for realy cheap price, , anyway this is just my opinion do it or not,
good luck to you

Breeding fish for money is a failing enterprise, but there are some papers out there on farming tropicals in a small setting. Angels are probably your best bet as they are very well documented. Given your aquarium size constraints, I recommend you get some african cichlids and breed those. Try yellow labs or saulosi. Both are popular and colorful and easy to breed. I have a colony of wild caught saulosi, I am bout to pull about 50-60 fry and they sell for about $1 to $2 wholesale. But seriously you are not gonna make more than couple hundred bucks a year under the good circumstances. Lots of non-obvious costs to raising fish.
