Broken RD...

May have already been said........ but RD's don't eat live fish in the wild at any significant frequency. They are primarily snail and other invert feeders.

(yep, I see now that it was already said!)


That's a great looking RD! I'd be happy to trade you something that is GUARANTEED to eat live stuff -- including your fingers!

well considering my dual 30 power filters the tank water is pristine. i havent seen much mess come out of the plecos though and their still tiny.

JUST IN: my gf bought me a VERY juvenile JD at petland (not even an inch!)... ive always wanted one but their never available to me here!! SO, im gonna have to give my RD away now, though i was planning to anyway since hes more destructive than a fascination to my community... cant say im gonna miss him too much lol i just got a JD with a pretty good hint of a possible hump . oscar thinks hes food though...

how could he have a hint of a hump lol if hes not even an inch plus jackdemseys dont get much humps on there head anyways. and even if your water is crystal clear your fish will kill eachother due to the lack of tankspace.

i dont see any pics of red devils like this one, maybe the reason it doesnt eat feeders is it hates itself...

get him into therapy right away. He is most likely psychologicaly scarred from being removed from his natural habitat.

just reiterating some key points that have already been said:

-RD's are NOT piscivores meaning live fish is not a part of their natural diet, maybe here or there they'll catch a small fish but it's not their primary diet

-RD's primarily eat snails, small inverts etc and the large lips come from sucking these inverts out of tiny crevices...that's why WC RD's usually lose the large lips in captivity...**note..I've always wanted to get a WC RD with large lips and feed it by putting food into texas holy rock or something similar to see if I could get the RD to sustain the large lips

-JD's don't grow nuchal humps

well i no longer have the RD. nor the convict. both have been given good homes in tanks much bigger than i could have provided living in this little place.

my tank now consist of these members:
1 tiger oscar baby
2 plecos
1 O'opu
1 JD
1 baby silver aro (moving him asap)
1 baby clown knife (i know).

to say the least the tank has no conflict at all amongst each other.

really? JDs dont gain humps? damn i was thinking from the shape of its head it had an angle to it that could suggest it. all i know is that males grow beautiful and females grow... (when can i expect to determine its sex??)

Well naturally the red devil (Amphilophus labiatus) isn't a true piscavore like P.dovii etc.
It's natural diet would consist of small crustaceans, insects, snails, worms and other bottom dwelling organisms. it is named "labiatus" after it's calloused lips developed by its feeding behaviour of sand sifting for snails and such. Although it would still eat small fish , at the size yours is/was when caught it may have never eaten a single fish. My devil never ate other fish killed plenty but never ate them.

you can find them all over lake wilson, but i caught mine in the canal near sunpress and king windward nissan. there seem to be a handful of them there, but it doesn't look like a really big population. definitely easy to catch though, just cast your breadball wherever the orange glow of the fish is.
