Brown Algae

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That I’m not too sure of, can have a look into it, are they a good algae eater then?

Hmmm... i would avoid relying on any live animal to deal with the problem tbh...

Manual removal + some type of phosguard would probably be your best bet next to possibly using R.O water mixed with tap water for water changes???

^^ he is right. how I managed mine only wwithout the R.O water. I refuse to pay more for water than gasoline or diesel so I just deal with it. it goes away

Water changes are very infrequent in a Snakehead tank so manual removal and phosguard will have to do the trick.

Will I always have this problem with silicates etc?

Will I have to use phosguard constantly?

I kept them at one time and always changed the water at least once a week. thee one thing I didn't like much was cleaning that tank by hand LOL. depends on where ur getting the silicates dude. substrate or tap water. where are ur phosphates comin from? the tap or over feeding etc. I would start maybe by testing ur tap water? seachem make a fairly decent easy to read test kits for both phos and silicates.

As Doob already answered, it really dose depend on the source of the problem... for me, its my tap water that seems to randomly cause me problems during changing of seasons normally...

But everyone is different and sometimes it caused by different things getting into our water...

Hate to wake up a few month old thread...but I may be dealing with brown algae too...can anyone help to identify if that is in fact what I have in my tank? I’ll attach a close up and regular view, hopefully that’s good enough. Thanks! 9114CBAB-4ECD-493D-A1FD-E19F021F3261.jpeg4655ABBB-89A8-4F1E-BC9A-A0208BD99DDC.jpeg

Others could confirm for sure but imo yes that's brown algae.

I get some brown algae in my (non-planted) tanks, the way I deal with it quite easily is with a UV sterilizer -- you've got to scrub the algae off so it becomes free floating (and do this for a while until it's pretty much gone, then it's just needed once in a while). But for heavier cases, as others have advised some kind of phosphate/silica removal remedy might be needed as well.

thanks. yeah this seemed to have come on out of nowhere the last few days...it is a new tank, less than 2 months as of now...I don't have a sterilizer as of now, ill have to look into that vs a phosphate/silica removal media is best for me. So this algae isn't light related?
