so Ive read 2 or 3 times now they dont need uvb and thought that must be crap.Is that true, they dont?I would think otherwise based on being a herp thats basking.

Looks at the lineages... you have your iguanids, chamaeleonids and agamids (along with a few other families) in one lineage, and your scincids, varanids, serpentes, gekkonids (along with a few others) in the other lineage.

You can tell which one needs UVB and which one doesn't, eh?

I won't even get into the Toxicofera idea that is going around lately. Venom is soooooo easy to produce from a biological standpoint. All it require is a transformation of the saliva and delivery method.

Hmm... varanio, I am intrigued in those halogen bulbs. How much more heat they produce than regular basking bulbs?

I am using 75W for 10 gallon aquariums, 100W for 30 gallon aquariums and a 150W for a 40 gallon breeder... Hmm.

Its not a matter of what wattage you use, I just place the softer bulbs on closer to the basking area so it accomplishes the same task a 75 would from a farther distance. This method actually helps with a better temp distribution; actually giving the animal a more wider range of temps with one real HOT spot.

Ah. I was just thinking since halogen give off more heat than an incandescent... and last thing I want to do is fry them. :irked:

Halogen is much better IMO. You can get a nice hot spot with much less wattage with halogen bulbs, and also it's a "brighter" light which I think would be more natural for the herp. As for temps just experiment with different wattages and distances from the basking spot.

Yeah you have to be careful using them, they do get very hot and you don't want to use them near water because splashing water can burn them out and/or crack them. I generally used the floods rather than the spots.

My GF and I got a baby BTS in Janurary. It hasn't had a trickle of UVB lighting on it since we've had it. The little bugger is currently over double the size it was when we acquired it and as you can see, has beautiful coloration....its probably one of the prettiest BTS I've ever seen. And all without UV.

Yep, skinks generally don't need it. And wow, what a skink...I've considered BTS off & on for awhile now but there's so many different locales etc that I'm never sure what I'd end up getting. What kind is that one? Looks awesome.
