Busy doing a few tests at the moment to see what I am going to seal the acrylic with.

I put silicone on a piece of acrylic last night and it does not hold at all. let alone hold poorly as I have read on here.

I am not taking any chances with this.

At this stage, Silicone sticks like CRAZY to the resin I used for fibre glassing, now I am just waiting for the resin to cure on my test piece of acrylic to see if it will hold on acrylic.

I have also tried superglue which sticks to acrylic but the silicone does not hold well to super glue, its far better that the bare acrylic but still far from ideal.

I am also trying some quickset epoxy.

I just spoke to the local 3m technical manager and he says 3M 560 Sealant is the way to go. It is polyurethane flexible sealant that adheres to acrylic. It is available in white grey and black and im wanting black so that is perfect.

Most EXCELLENT!!

I have 100% total confidence in 3M products.
I have, at times, trusted my life with 3M 5200s ability,
to keep water where it was supposed to be during savage, winter weather on the Pacific Northwest coast of the USA. There are many thru-hull fittings that are sealed with 5200 under the waterline. If they were to fail, we would have sank right to the bottom, at 400 feet deep in 30ft seas!!

If 3M says it will work, it WILL work.

Just make sure to follow their recommendations on:
Which product to use,
Preparing the surfaces to be sealed,
The proper amount of time to cure,
and
At the recommended temperature range.

Good luck with the project, I like it alot...
BTW you have a PM...~BenO

Well..............Stuck the acrylic in early Saturday morning. That 3M 560 sealant sticks like hell! To the acrylic and the pond paint.

I am guessing by the warning labels on the tube that its far from fish safe though so I have covered all of the exposed areas with marine silicone.

This will protect my fish if it is harmful and gives me a second seal.

I did some sanding on the top of the tank yesterday which has covered the acrylic panel with white dust so there is no point posting pics yet. I will see if i can find the time tomorrow to do a test fill, Then I can get the dust off the acrylic without scratching it and take some pics.

I managed to mess some of the sealant on the wood surface outside the tank which ruined the finish so I have sanded that all down so I can re-finish it. The whole thing looks like a train wreck at the moment but it should all come together soon.

In regards to suggestion about 3m 5200, I worked in the boat business for while. Amazing stuff Sticks to absolutlely anything and dries so strong you need an angle grinder to remove it.

Most of the fisherman I worked with up there just used duct tape for that... ;).

I wasn't a fisherman though, I was "the big bad government dude" messing around in their business...
