building a 500 gallon plywood tank

I just have one suggestion. Your stand is basically a tray with the bottom piece of wood. Why not waterproof it and seal it so it acts like a catch tray. You never know if you have a leak in your sump or something. That way you will contain it and not have it go all over your house. Since your tank is in your living area it would be a good insurance against leaks.

great mind think alike ,,,, yeah i will make the stand water proff , i know it would been alot easy to paint the stand befor adding the tank , but im doing it 1 step at a time , cause this whole thing is my first project and i didnt want to spend any more money till i know i can get the tank to hold water , once i know the tank is up and no leaks , i will epoxy my whole stand with what ever kinda epoxy , not the safe fish kind cause its double the price , will paint it inside and out side and even the top of the stand where all my supports are , and once i paint the stand im going to silicone the whole bottom , so water cant get into the joints , , the silicone the whole bottom around everthing , just make since to me , and im still open to what im going to skin the whole thing with , and thats going to be water proff too , thaanks for your tip , im on it lol

Forgot to ask if you used fiberglass cloth anywhere on the tank or just epoxy? Are you worried of the tank flexing or epoxy cracking down the road?

i went by garf sight on my tank , i thought over and over about if i should or shouldnt use fiberglass , and decided not to use it , one of my co worker friend built about same size tank same way i did and years later his still going , only 1 shhet of glass,,,, i dont know if it will crack or flex down the road , yeah it scare me , but then again , plywood tank kinda scary , i seen alot people have them and i allways wanted 500 galloon, i did research for about a year befor i started building , so i guess time will tell ,, i sure hope it last , but its not the end of the world if it dont , and alot people look at plywood tank differetly , should do this or do that , which is good to have more then 1 eyes on a project , but how many is talking from haven been there , like has a plywood tank built and is running ,,, in all i think i did good job , but im a man that will say my bad if im wrong , so if you see a post where i say i got a home made slip and slide ,lol hopefully not ever,, but you will see my bad and i would rethink how i built mine if your thinking of building plywood tank , i posted my tank so everycan see how it goes bad or good , NOTE i pray good , and thanks to you and everyone who reads my post ....

I was just curious and its always a debate with custom tanks. My 650 with pondliner build has been running for 2 yrs now. Its always in the back of my mind something could go wrong lol but i guess the hobby wouldnt b fun if everything was perfect. Fingers crossed for the both of us hah. Its nice to see water in ur tank :) great build

Hi great build by way. I'm new to site as well, in my year of research while me and the wife save to buy a house with the view of enough space for a monster tank build. Currently run a 95G and a 110G marine and lake tanganyika tanks. But will need more space for marine so want to custom build.

id say if you haven't used the fibreglass for extra protection when you go to set up marine be careful what fish you get..Triggers for example can be very playful/aggressive mine often goes nose butting the sides and glass or bashing rocks against it. This behaviour could cause the epoxy to crack sooner and without the fibre glass protection you could not only have a slip n slide but lose an expensive stock of fish.

Also when putting in your sump although the bigger sump is better think about whether you will have space for a skimmer and UV filter. There's a lot of debat on whether you'll need a skimmer or not but it certainly aids keeping water clear.

love the red, not such a fan of the body parts but each to own on decor. Just a few points of advance as a marinist!

if you don't mind, know its bit dif In states but how much has the complete build come to?

Great project, only of you allow me to say this: Don't spoil it with those crappy body parts.....

, lol the body stuff , i got from dollar store , only a buck each , i will find better and more real one , they just to start off ,,, i didnt want to spend hunderds of dollar on stuff inside the tank till i know it wil hold water , once i get it up and runing i will do the finish stuff , i plan on haven black and red rocks and under water led lights too ,, im guessing ill have few hundered bucks if not more into it when done
