building a 500 gallon plywood tank

The overflow can't out perform the pump. The amount the water that overflows is the exact amount that is being pumped in. The overflow can only under perform which would cause the tank to overflow. I'm not familiar with any named methods. He's getting gurgling cause he using a stand pipe for an overflow. Most overflows are made with a large box with slits on top. If the slits begin to clog it just rises the water higher up the slits. The water doesn't have to travel down a narrow pipe. Using an overflow box lets the water just drains at the bottom of the tank through the bulkhead into the sump just a short distance doesn't trap air. If he made the drain pipe flow out the back of the tank instead of in the middle of the tank he could put a small breather down in the middle of the pipe to let air escape. I'd think that look better IMO so you don't see those pipes standing inside the tank.

thanks for the infor , i added the overflows for 2 reason inside the tank , i went with clear pipe so i could see the water flow threw the pipe , i thought it be cool too see the water moving downthrew the tank (( which once i got the tank full and did , i like it , well me and my woman ,lol )) i the overflows are not really in the middle they my look in middle , but only few inches off the back wall , i went a few inches cause the fish could swim behind them , i didnt want it only inch of the wall and a bigger fish trying to squeeze by it and get h stuck .... and yeah they would try , like a huge woman wearing a 2 peace bathing suit , never good sight lol jk ,,, and i didnt like the thought of haven the tank 3 more inches off the wall , i know its only few inches more , but few inches more matters , ask any woman lol lol jk , but thanks for the infor again

I think thats a pretty good way to do it. If you can dampen the splashing then it pretty much solves the whole situation. Depending on the spacing he could build an overflow box around the stand pipe area pretty easily but in order to seal it the tank would have to be drained, thats why I kept hammering at the herby method.

Well anyhow, sounds like we got you covered either way kherron. You just have to decide what makes the most sense to you and do it

thanks to you and everyone for the tips thanks again

been haven a problem with my filter system , was just too loud , making a gulping sound , so I ask for help , and im going with what everyone told me to do , 1 pipe shorter and at full siphon with a valve that's tune to my pumps and other 2 overflows little taller ,,,, I added a valve right under the bulk head and then pipe it off to my filter tank and started to run my system , it was siphon way too fast at first so was turning the valve slowly and I guess the stress of the valve and elbow right under the bulk head was too much , the bulk head started slowly leaking , drip here and there , so I get my plyers out and tighten my bulk head nut down some , didn't get much more then 1/2 a turn , and the nut stripped out and came very loose and had water starting spraying me in the face , I played with the nut and gotten it kinda cross thread to hold it tempory , after about 1 full min it was back to leaking a drip here and there , got my pump out and started draing my tank , which take about 30 min , which when your 500 gallon tank is leaking from the bottom hole , not fast enough , tank drain and clean up my water , im going have to cut my pipe off and install new bulk head and replum it again , have to say my friday night really suck , very frusted , anyway , on a good thought , was working silent , couldn't hear it run at all ,very happy ,till I about made a slip and slide in my house , anyway waiting on bulk heads , I order the regular schedule 40 ,, but thinking im going to get the schedule 80 bulk head , little stronger now , till then

sorry guys , no real up date , i have not had time or money to do anything yet , but soon i will be getting back on track , i did get my filter system quite and it was working , i need to paint inside of my stand and building the canopy too , i did some for the canopy but still got while to go , i know i have been slacking lol , but time for tank is hard with kids and work and everthing
