  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice tank. You got more guts than I do!!! What are you stocking it with?

12mm is the thinner of two possibilities for a tank this large, yes. but you're being a bit dramatic about the whole thing.

I'd probably design it with 15mm as well, but writing something down on paper is differnent than doing it! Each pane would weigh 25% more than it already does. a 3mx0.8m chunk of 12mm glass should be heavy enough! without running the numbers I'd wager somewhere around 4-500lbs

Very nice setup there, hopefully it all holds together well.

yehp and 12mm should not be used for any greater size then

2.5x2.5'
2x3'
3x2'

theese sizes refer to end panels

not only is that tank severly underbuilt as far as glass thickness but its one base peice and 1mm of sag in the stand at one point will cause a seveer accident. and trust me man ive heard some sick stories like a little girl getting impaled in the head by a peice of 6mm thick glass flying with 600litres pushing it through her head needless to say she died slowly and painfully.
do you know why this guy bought a 6x2x2 off someone with no tank building experience (the maker was a glazier), instead of profesionals? 35 dollars. it was built pout of 6mm thick glass and we use 10mm. needless to say thats only 6mm imagin 12mm.

heck today i neede to remove a cracked 12mm and 10mm peice of glass from a 200x80x80cm tank.10mm ends, built incorrectly had braces and thoose dudes were lucky they heard it and got the f*** outta that room

Well actually.... the size of the pane doesn't necessarily determine it's thickness. The depth of the tank, and the length of UNSUPPORTED span decides the thickness. Your 2'x3' rules are close enough for a rule of thumb, but what have you based those on? If you do the actual math on it, 12mm will hold water when used in much deeper and larger tanks even than this one, the whole book full of rules of thumb rely on safety factors.

As for the bottom, as long as we can assume he's built the stand correctly, he'd be better off with thin glass vs thick glass, as it will absorb any sagging without creating large surface stresses. oh and a 3m long chunk of 12mm glass can bend a hell of a lot more than 1mm without creating a whole lot of surface stress. The sides of my 50gallon breeder tank bend more than 1mm when I fill it up.

Don't get me wrong, big tanks can be dangerous, I see what you're saying. Your original comment of "you know that will break, right?" or something to that effect, I found a bit presumptuous, especially since this tank held water before it even came into his posession. For all we know the glass could be tempered as well, making 12mm MORE than strong enough, and much safer, as it will not break into big shards that spear young girls through the head and somehow make them die slowly.

hello people the tank is filled already and im not planning on changing anything about so please quit f**king my thread up with slowly dying girls and sh*t,

Uhm, Chill out man, it's a discussion forum; we're discussing the design of your tank. Obviously you're not changing anything. If you just wanna post pictures and not have anyone talk about it, start a blog.
