Okay, so I've never really been a fan of Burmese Pythons. They're so... common. Egh. But I recently bought a 12ft. Albino Burmese from this woman who could no longer care for him. The Python was in terrible condition and I just couldn't resist. He's extremely skinny, has several retained eye caps in one eye and some sort of cataract (I think) underneath all that. The main issue is that he has a really bad upper respiratory infection and I've never had to deal with a URI in such a large constrictor. Are there any snake people out there who could offer me some advice? I gave Batryl injections to my retic when he had a URI. It didn't seem to solve the problem, just subdue it for a night or two.

take to a vet as soon as you could to get the lungs checked out. for the eye caps get some q-tips and moisten the tip and try wiping them off but if that doesnt work i heard you can use normal tape wrapped around your fingers and tap the eye lids and they might come off but its not a huge deal if they are on.

Yeah use tape its a great trick recommended by vets.. :D

I wonder if you can put a snake in a nebulizer(sp?)

lol, just something i read before id look into it first before trying it though as i said i think lol and gl trying get a nebulizer over a berms face

HAHAH WOW! If I never hear of that tape trick again it will be too soon. I'm not concerned about the caps. I can get those off after a few of his sheds, no problem. Nebulizer sounds like a Super idea. First I think I'll try shooting a puff of my inhaler down his wind pipe... o_O

For future reference, don't ever try that tape trick unless its absolutely necessary. You can damage the eye and cause blindness. Also never trust those damned vets! Most of them aren't trained to deal with reptilians, they just grab their 'lil med books and try and thow some half assed bullcrap together for you. Thats why I'm not taking Ikaris to the vet. They screw me over every time. I'm hoping someone has had this issue before and can steer me in the right direction. If worse comes to worse I'll eventually have to take him to the local reptile dude to get looked at.

Awsome. Thanks. I'll definatly give the soaking idea a try. But I don't know about raising the temp... Dry climate can also lead to respiratory problems. I don't know if I should take that risk. But like I said, I've never had a Burmese before. Considering they do come from a pretty high humidity climate, don't you think It'd be better to keep his temperature normal?

Sounds like the man knows what hes talking about.. perhaps a short period in a hot dry climate will help with fluids in the lung?

Warmer climates causing respiratory? this is common for high humidity animals? Just curious.. sometimes at my work I have to deal with those creepy crawlies so I try to learn stuff here and there..... good thing i have this freak show girl to take care of the reps

PS. we got tetracycline on the shelf, yo.. There is some 'Maracyn-TC' that is on clearance for $7 a package.. the other stuff is like $15 a package..

also wondering if the 'special in the back' stuff would help.. like rotating soaks in uniprim and nutralyte? check out arythromyacin too because its with the 'special in the back' stuff too..

Maybe. Warming him up might be worth a try, I just don't want him to start coughing up snot again. It was friggin' disgusting.

And yes dry climates do cause URI's. It's how my old Retic got his. The ass clowns at NW seed and pet kept him on aspen bedding. I had to keep tweaking with his hab until I got it just right. Reticulated pythons, along with many other constrictors need high humidity; unbeknownst to most idiots who buy them without proper information.

Anywho, the tetracycline sounds like a plan to me. I'm not gonna mess with the other "special" stuff. I dont know how snakes react to any of that other junk. I'm takin' this thing one step at a time.

And hey, that freak show girl sounds like a winner. You should like give her a raise or something.
