Couldn't agree more. I saved up and planned for 6 months before I bought a 180G, cycled it, then put in all my juvenile cichlids. It looks ridiculously empty now, with negligible bioload, but I'd rather they grow up in a healthy, spacious environment without the future uncertainty of whether their cramped tank is going to be upgraded or not. But a lot of people these days have no patience. It's all about impulse decisions and instant gratification.

I just wanna point out if I was keeping fish in a small aquarium and had no plans to upgrade I would say so because if it was working then wth being flagged isn't the end of the world. Like check it out I've kept different large fish in aquariums considered to small for them in the past as the sole inhabiter but I have still kept these fish with great results especially with large cichlids such as a Red Devil in 40 gallon breeder that was close to or over a foot long sure their was a lot of gravel moved around the tank and I couldn't keep any decorations rooted but he was as healthy as he could be and he never seemed "unhappy" or stressed in his tank. I knew the tank wasn't a perfect home for my fish and eventually found a new home for him but their is no doubt in my mind this guy was thrving in his tank up until I him away.
Also dude I'm just saying don't be so damn negative I doubt many people are lying about wanting to or planning to upgrade sometimes things just fall short, most people don't research fish before they get a tank and I don't support this but it happens just the same. Then these individuals have some learning to do and they might not have all the equipment they need don't be so harsh and honestly if you think about it many of these people make up the biggest percentage of this forum or have at some point in their fish keeping. I've noticed large tanks can be very expensive so if these individuals wish to wait on purchasing the tank while they have the time and space to so then why not if the fish is fine and most of all good luck finding a pet store employee who won't sell you a silver arowana for your 10 gallon aquarium again research should be done but I'm not gonna shame the new aquarium owner who expected the petstore owner or employee to have some knowledge on the livestock they sell that seems like it would be pretty straight forward that's they should right? also the internet if full of idiots telling people to stock their 20 gallon long with small FW stingrays and balasharks so unless you check the source research can be useless as well. I once asked at what size I should move my Oscars from his 40 to the 180 gallon I had just finished cycling and I had multiple people tell me to leave him in the 40 and it was big enough for 2 Oscars and some silver dollars and that I should pick up some bigger "monster" fish at this point I asked around not believing this was true as I had seen adult Oscar and silver dollars and found out it wasn't, I'm not kidding this has happened to me.
So I'm not arguing with you man and trust me I'm not looking for a fight but if I were you I'd just chill with the false accusations who knows what type of issues these ppl are having possibly financially or maybe even their strapped for time hell they might be finding it hard to actually find the time to go out and find, purchae, and set up a new tank that they need and I don't know about you but I think this hobby should be enjoyed by everyone not just those who wish to jump straight in to keeping a 240 gallon tank or spending 2000 on a setup.

You guys are in to deep lol! It's Friday. Post was meant for people that have jags in 10g and arowanas in 55g. I was just trying to inform new people to listen to you more experienced people because you know what's best. A grow out tank in one thing but a small tank with a large stock and crappy water is another. No worries the weekend is here

Well.... Apparently my argument for educational sake has fallen on deaf or comprehension challenged individuals. It is the weekend and I'm through wasting time for the hard headed and the "I"ll post if I want bunch." I gotta do a water change on the betta bowl with my Marble Cat in it. I'm with red man on this. People should not be so quick to criticize people who got into the hobby the wrong way. The 2nd post I ever posted here was about my Arowana. He is in a grow out 340L tank. I posted that I had done a year of research prior and I was due an upgrade in the next year. All I wanted to know was if he was safe with other fish and I get somebody posting a link to how big an arow actually gets? I mean come on that's just cheek. Because of that I almost took the high horse pretty quickly, I am just saying for future posts because I am new here and on my 2nd post I felt kinda insulted. Don't get me wrong I was educated about something else all the same but that's not the point. I am forever going on posts, completely unrelated to how big the tank is but still that question is ALWAYS asked, maybe come at it from a different angle because it may put people off. I have seen many online arguments start from this! Sorry to carry it on but I thought you had a really good point.
If I went by the "buy tank then fish" concept, I would've had a virtually empty 150 gallon tank for five years well I waited for my fish to grow. Fishkeeping is not always a 'one size fits all' approach.
Yeah.... In extreme cases like where someone asks what can they feed their jag, Midas, convict and Oscar that are all sharing a 30 gallon.... I'm gonna mention the tank.
Anyways... I think we all are guilty of not being prepared for the fish that we buy when we started. I started with a group of Malawians in a 55. Only to later find out that they would eventually need a 6' tank. I'll blame myself and I'll blame the fish store. The dude their knew where I was putting them and had no objections.
It wasnt until I joined a forum and a few people set me straight that I saw the error in my ways. I had done some research but a lot of fish profiles really aren't that great. You almost have to join a forum to get good advice. The profiles set you on the right path but the forums are where the money is.

Some people need to get thicker skin. Why is someone telling you that your tank is too small taken as an insult
What I meant was when people underestimate your experience and try and teach you about how to house something correctly. I have seen it many a times when somebody's experience has been insulted and they get offended, I was only trying to throw that out there. Besides, my tanks a nice strong 9 inch if we gonna be like that
I don't think it's taken as an insult unless it's said in a ****ty way which isn't uncommon for this site, when it comes to talking about the minimum aquarium size for many fish and the persons current tank I've noticed most of the comments are no longer helpful just repetitive and can get quite rude at this point, I believe the problem is the number of individuals who like to bring it up and waste everyone's time and untimely change nothing except the topic of conversation on this forum to just talking about an individual's aquarium size and the minimum aquarium size or even worse stating the already known, ok an Oscar should be in no less then a 75 gallon when grown right? well if someone is growing out a 1.5 inch Oscar in a 29 gallon with 300gph filter for their 75 or even 180 gallon tank but only mention the 29 as that's all that pertains to the question then really it shouldn't be mentioned that the tank will be t small as it isn't currently to small and the fish has a long way to outgrow said tank it's kinda like this. help where help isnt needed is no longer helping anyone, and honestly its just badgering them and leaving their questions unanswered In most cases like why can't this forum just talk about what's at hand and the question asked is it because no one knows the answer and they just have to say something?? I've seen many people who even ask what size tank the fish are in which is completely irrelevant just to jump down the person who was originally asking the questions throat seconds later, why is this even a topic for discussion at this point the minimum aquarium sizes for allmost all fish are the first thing to come up when you research a species and overall it comes down to common sense if you have a big fish or a fish that grows extremely fast get it a big tank if you have a very small or slow growing fish you can start with whatever the hell you want if it fits, I like how even when posting for the first time on this forum about my fish this was mentioned unknown to many that I was in the process of cycling a large aquarium and none of my fish were even over 4 inches at the time it's just ridiculous fortunately someone commented the answer to my original question and I could honestly care less but I see this new many cases where I feel like it drives the person away from these forums or asking questions which isn't right at all
