Calling all "Hot Heads"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know theres always a risk in dealing with venomous animals, but I think if you have a healthy dose of respect and knowledge you'll be fine.

Hopefully I will be able to find a breeder, or just an average hot keeper to take me under there wing and mentor me in the ways of keeping hots.

I dont think there is really any true hot to start with, because there isnt. It is best to be mentored with variouse venomous species until you feel confident with owning one, and then choose one that you feel best suites your ability. But, If you really must start with a first hot, I would choose a Copperhead rattlesnake as there venom is easily treatable...

My "first" hot will most likely be a Puff adder, then a gaboon viper, and will continue with vipers after that. Maybe after a few years of keeping vipers move into elapids...

Probably starting with an amazon tree boa would help you to appreciate very quickly the speed and precistion in which these animals can strike (ATB's are nuts and will not heaitate to strike multiple times!!!).........learn to properly handle and feed and transfer / clean cages with one of these and if you manage to not get bit multiple times....................that would be a start.:)

I would love to get a yellow eyelash viper, or a bush viper, but will never do so as i have a baby on the way and cant risk it...............gaboons are insane...........I could not fathom :WHOA: getting bitten by 2+ inches of venoumous fangs............at least with arboreal vipers you can at least judge (sort of) stiking distance as the animal will most likely be perched!!!!

:)

I dont really like ATB's but I'll consider it. I'm definately getting a GTP when I move out of my moms house (I cant have any herps at my moms and already have a BCC at my dads and one snakes enough for him) But yeah, as I said before, I'm not just jumping into hots. Thats why I'm trying to find someone local so I can test the waters befure I fully commit to doing so.

Plus, I still have alot of boas/pythons to buy.

How can you NOT like ATB's? :banhim:

Or you could go with a Mangrove Snake(Boiga dendrophila) I've been seriously considering getting one.

I dont know, I just dont like ATB's. Haha.

But when I'm moved out I'm going to get started on ordering all my Pro-line cages and then get to work on a few Boas, and some Pythons. I might be getting a retic or two, and a Burmese for sure along with a few smaller species of python. I'm a Boid-o-phile!

And Those mangrove snakes are beauty's Now I'm gonna need one of those.

I'm going to try and keep my collection small and manageable, the only really big snakes will be the retics and burm.

I think you just went against yourself.

Just make sure your local hospital has anti-venom for each one. As human error is inevitable no matter how much you think you're on your game. And those snakes may suprise you one day when you think you know their next move. GL though.

On the bright side there is that guy who's been working with some sort of HOT snakes for like 50 years and his body has become immune to the venom because he's been bit so many times.

same here................absolutley love the boigas........cant resist the blk on yellow........

but remember these are rear fanged snakes that can stiill pack a punch if they get a hold of you good enough!!!.....and the mangroves are another snake that will not hesitate to bite!!!:D

P>S>..........ATB's have one of the widest color variations of any snake out there..............from drab garden phases............to blazing reds...........and everything in between

I like some ATB's and some I dont. I just started to ignore them after hearing of a crapload of people having issues with them, from anal prolapses to many other nasty things.

I'd like an ATB or two, and a GTP of some kind. I just need to keep my collection relatively small.

True but with the talk of copperheads, gaboons, etc I figured I throw in a little more of a "warm" w/nasty disposition snake.

I've had my ATB for over 2 years and I haven't had any problems.
