Does anyone have pictures of the H. efaciatus Jeff Rapps was sell at adult size? I have 2 a M+F and its been taking forever for them to grow they are at 3"-3.5".

I have a male and it is easily 5.5-6". They grew very similiar to rotkeils or notatus.

You are going to have a very hard time convincing me these fish are anything other then a regional variety of a rotkeil. Mine has the typical bar pattern, red shoulder, and blue face. His base color is slightly different then what you normally see in rotkeils but that is it. Otherwise pretty much identical.

One thing for sure is they are not what they were sold as. They were supposed to be the tapajos severums that get the red lines on there face. There are some pictures on this thread of some of them. The picture that Jeff sent me of an adult is not what mine turned out to be. Mine is a very nice severum but not what I was hoping for.

Joel, mine look the same. I have a male and female as well. The male has blue striation on the face and red developing behind his gills. The female remains pretty colorless and shows bars most of the time. They look about the same size, too.

I sometimes use Amazon Exotic Import's website as a reference. They have two listings: one for H. sp. 'Tapajos' and one for H. sp. 'Tapajos Red Spot.

H sp. Tapajos: http://amazon-exotic-import.de/Gallerie/Cichliden/Seiten/Heros sp. Tapajos.htm (The fish in the background is obviously not the same as the one in the foreground and appears to be a rottie, which is what mine looks more like!)

H. sp. Tapajos Red Spot: http://amazon-exotic-import.de/Gallerie/Cichliden/Seiten/Heros spec. Tapajos Red Spot.htm

Mine don't look like either of those. Like I said, they look more like green severums (their bodies are tan/green/brown) but with the red on the neck.

The top picture is what Jeff sent me as a reference and that is what I was hoping for. Mine is definately not that fish. Mine is a rotkeil and so are the other ones posted on the previous page. Mine is also from the same batch as everyone elses. Jeff has only had these guys listed once to my lnowledge. Guess mine just grew faster.

There isn't any that I know of, other than coming from the Tapajos ... a regional variant of the green sev. Rapps was the first to get them in I believe, and just that just this year.

Assuming there was no mix up and these fish were indeed from Rio Tapajos....there are two possibilities:

1. They are evolutionarily closer to rotkeil, but were either recently introduced to Rio Tapajos, or have been there all along but evaded collection until recently.

2. They are evolutionarily closer to efasciatus, but have independently evolved the lateral bar patten, the red shoulders, the bright orange fins, the blue on dorsal fins, among other traits, to be phenotypically identical to rotkeil.

One appears more parsimonious than the other, although it doesn't necessarily make it right.

If anybody really wants to know, send some samples and a few hundred bucks - I'll do the sequencing :)

I'll send a fin clipping. I'll let you take care of the few hundred bucks though:ROFL:.

THe heros group really does need some DNA work done. It's a bit of a mess at the moment.

It is pictures on post 1249 a couple pages back. I have it listed as a wild Rotkeil because that is what I believe it is. It came from Rapps from the same batch as the other posted that claim to be tapajos efasciatus. It's a nice fish so I'm happy with it. Just not what I was hoping for.

That picture is a couple months old now and the fish has a lot more red now and it's face is getting more blue ever day.

Just wanted to confirm that what i have are also rotkiels?
these are old pics, only left with 1 male as i gave away the others.
these are F1, but i noticed their color is not as bright as other posted rotkiels?

I have a female f0 rotkiel, currently paired with an f1 male .

I just moved the eggs to a pail, hope they hatch. just noticed the pictures above of my severums, their redness is redder than bright red?

Maybe we need a thread just for H. notatus? I never know where to post pictures of my kids.

Here they were when I got them from Jeff a month ago. They were probably barely an inch long then.

Nice looking heros! Crazy how much change in color a month made. I wish I had more tank space, I love these guys. My LFS has a bunch really cheap. I think David503bk just bought some notatus from the same LFS I mention.

D- get some pics in this thread man!
