Calling experienced iguana keepers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed romain lettuce, carrots, red cabbage, kale, just about every kind of fruit and sprinkle repti calcium powers with d3 on it.

I have a retisun 5.0 and a inferred heat lamp for heating. Idk what's the cage temp at the moment cause I have to get a thermometer but if I had to guess I would 70* at the lowest point and around 90* at the highest point the iguana can get to.

Like vet said I'm no noob to reptiles. I owned several large snakes, iguanas , bearded dragons ,frogs and turtles. It's just been long since I owned one I want to make sure I get all my bases covered

Nice!

Keep in mind if you provide UVB like you do additional D3 IS not necessary but its hard to find calcium without D3.

RepCal makes a good product, they have a great multi vitamin and calcium minus d3 and at that age you don't need a dusting every feeding. Try dusting a multivitamin 2x a week and same with calcium http://www.petmountain.com/category/417/1/reptile-food-supplements.html

Also checking your temps just yo be sure can be a good idea. Sometime when their to hot they get light and vice versa!

The bulk of, or around 80% of their diet should be dark leafy greens,
You can switch out the romain lettuce for collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, arugula, turnip greens, and kale are all nutritionally excellent for iguanas.

You can also bump up the temps a bit, the basking spot can be 95 degs and shoot for 80 deg on the cooler end, to allow for better digestion and better synthesis of vitimin D3.

How in the world do you leash train an iguana? I've seen the leashes for sale, but never thought of getting one. I had a 3' female that was pretty tame, but I would never treat it like a dog. They have their own agenda and pretty much just tolerate you because you feed it. Kinda more like a cat. Mine was somewhat potty trained but that's because they like to go in water or near water.

Like this. I don't treat mine like a dog. I just like to use the leash just incase if I take him outside ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1398986858.770728.jpg

I know the extra d3 isn't needed but I use it. When I got the powder I didn't read the label just saw calcium powder and grabbed it. I know there's one with and without d3 of the one I got. I'm going to grab a thermometer tomorrow when I get out of work and get a stronger heat bulb.

See that's why it's good to ask. Now I know what I need to add to his diet. I personally wouldn't take out the romain cause I raised my three iguanas on it when I was younger and they love it and grew to be bigger and healthy

Kale is definitely a good staple! I always get 'organic'

You should check out super veggie by repashy, it contains many nutritious things! http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005BZIPUQ?pc_redir=1398833259&robot_redir=1

Brassica (kale among other things) are high in goitrogens, a common phytotoxin. Too many goitrogens in the diet can cause things such as hypothyroidism and goiters by interfering with the animals iodine intake. This is not to say they should not be fed, but do not overuse them.

Anything but lettuce as a main staple fed a ton is bad! Its only 1/4 of the mixture plus I rotate that between chard/mustard.

Ive kepted and bred cyclura for twenty plus years and kale, chard, mustard green and red leaf lettuce are great staples. Add in some fresh vegetables and fruits rotating to keep him/her interested. Also keep giving the D3 most uvb bulbs only penetrate vertically 8-10". I have not used uvb for 10 years and never had a problem mbd or calcium. The cuban rock in my avitar is 16 years old 44" and 16 lbs. He is tame and a proven breeder. All my hatchlings are tail whippers until about a year, they see everything as a potential predator until they get some size and used to their surroundings. Keep handling him every day or other day and he will calm down.
