I'll take a pic in the morning if the link for AC doesn't work for you. I have the link for my build thread in my first post I think.;)

Yup it is an overflow system...
Now if there is a power failure, the pump stops pumping water into the tank, so there is no water to overflow into the sump...when the power restores, then the pump will start to overflow the tank, the air-lifter starts the syphon in the overflow box and everything is back running again...

Basically...
I'm sry to interrupt but I don't quite get it.. the sump will always be full of water, right? cause the flow to the sump is by gravity so if there's a power failure, the water in the sump will eventually flow out.. Sry, I'm confused.. correct me if I'm wrong.. I think I'm missing the whole idea here.. what's an air lifter?
Cause I'm learning to DIY my own sump as well..

Read the entire basic explanation. Particularly the sentence right before you cut my quote...

Can you easily remove the partition where the eggcrate and skimmer is?

I think I've got the basic idea now.. The water in the display tank has to be below the overflow level?
Sry for hijacking this thread, Lady G.. hope you won't mind.. :)

The water level in the display tank, is determined by the level of the overflow...

So all the water that the return pump, pumps from the sump to the tank is "OVERFLOW" which is drained back into the sump, for filtering...

It's actually very simple once you see it in action...

It is essential that your overflow box be able to return MORE than your pump can supply...

As a guideline, I like to be able to overflow, 1500gph for a 1000gph return pump...
