i'm not confused about anything, a couple years ago we had rattle snakes in town because they could not find anything to eat, some folks did lose some cats, we used to have prairie dogs, but i think they are all gone now, we do have lots of lizards and horn toads, they are on the endangered species list, the horn toads that is, y'all need to come down here for our annual rattle snake round up. i do not harm any animal no matter its species, snakes just do not agree with me and i know this comes from spending 3 1/2 years in viet nam, maybe no excuse but somethings a person does not overcome, one thing that always suffers when man gets involved is nature, as in sub divisions exploding population, building, we can't stop it, and so far we have not been to kind with our animal population, our soil for the most part consists of caliche which is about as hard as concrete, i put water tanks out so birds have water as well as any other animal. i gave up on live stock as feed and supplies got to the point that i no longer had profit left. this is not a sob story just harsh reality. i did not realize i was going to be called ignorant, know the area and what it is capable of before passing judgement. years ago when oil was first discovered no one cared about anything, however all that is changed, they basically leave the environment around the drill site, unchanged. well i think i am done, thanks for listening to me go on forever.

Another completly diferent thing is to use your fobia as a excuse to harm the beings you despise. I tell you there is no way that snake poses any harm to you or your family. Unless cornered ,in wich case she will try to defend herself to save her life by any means posible from what at her eyes is a giant predator (and you would do the same if you swiched places with her) or if you posse any harm to the hachlings or eggs of a nesting female, this is a completly harmless animal that will try to excape when ever given the chance. This snake is more harmless to you and your family than the rats and mice she feeds on(the bite of a mice or a rat can transmit to you a football field long list of desises). If you try to have a less narrow mind aproach to snakes you see that if you allow the presence of this harmless species you are protecting yourself. You may say "but we kill all the vermin we find". Thats rigth the few that you find you kill. But have you wondered why they are so few. Because of snakes Snakes are more efective rodent killers than any poison ,trap or any other human mean to kill rats. they smell the rat and tanks to the legless body they have they are able to follow it into its lare for lunch
And snakes are only there because of the great ecossistem that exists there and that you helped preserv
Now to be completly eco you only need to change your mind toards snakes You dont need to like them Just let them be and you and your family will trive in the great balance that will result from that. This however doesant mean you should allow any snake around your house. As for ratlesnakes the question becomes tricky because they really pose danger to you. Dont misunderstend them however. They are not there to get you or bite on purpose. They are just looking for food and shelter. However if they are stumped upon or cornered they will strike to defend thenselfes. The best thing I can thing of is to give some warning shots toards the snake to the ground to see if you can scare her. A 6 foot stick can also became handy. However do not atend ratlesnakes rounds
These were not snakes that were in the midle of someone back yard, they are completly inocent snakes that were taken from its natural habitat to be killed in completly barbaric sircunstances. You may not like snakes but you must understend they are not things, they are animals , they fell pain just like you. As a side note remenbar that the evolucionary pressure of ratlesnake roundups, is creating "new silent ratlesnakes" that do not use there ratle as a warning before striking making them even more dangerous It is a completly abnormal thing and is created by humans and there savage ways. Dont atend ratlesnake round ups and spread the word. As a side note encorage kingsnakes to live on your backyard if you dont want ratlesnakes. just an update on my snake, he is in fact a bull snake, not normally found in this part of texas, i called a snake handler friend of mine and he told what i needed to know as near as we can figure someone carried him out here and knowing i have all type of wild life at my place they just threw him over the fence. we found where he had shed his skin, it was quite neat, we decided to let him live here as long as he wants, my grandson is concerned about his turtles and lizards, the tall grass near my barn is where they live. we will just have to wait and see how this turns out. tahnks for all your help with the id.
rat snakes usually have small patterns too...i heard my little cousin, a 4 year old caught one that looked like that

Wacking snakes has been a TX tradition for many years.
