i wont bother asking a question that i'm sure you have no good answer for! you're like many others...showing off your ignorance! our "guesses" are at least out of experience! I did admit that i have no experience w/ L. platostomus...but i do have plenty of experience w/ most others. while i may not be the most intelligent "gar expert" on this forum, i would say i know enough to make a good "guess".

The debate isnt even between Florida or Spotted...It is between Florida/Spotted or Shortnose, as Florida and spotted gar have no morphological differences. We arent just "betting" or "voting" on which it is, as a vote isn't going to make it one or the other.
do you have two of these gar? do you have a more recent pic of the other?
i think the caudal peduncle is shaped more like that of the florida/spotted than the shortnose. i'm still gonna say florida/spotted on this one.

Im sorry the other one died..about a month ago... Reason for death unknown.. I woke up one morning to find him dead on the bottom.. Ill be getting another one within a week or 2..
in terms of the "sub-debate" going on, we know jordan's guess is at least somewhat educated, whereas keepinfish's guess doesn't have much back-up to it...i'm not saying your guess couldn't as good, but you've provided no evidence or reason as to why your guess would be as good, other than "everyone is guessing".
jordan has based his on his experience thus far with gars, richard has also commented based on very extensive experience with gars...in fact, he and i met up yesterday and this was one of the topics that came up.
given the latest pics of the specimen, i would stick by saying Florida/spotted gar...or at least it matches up with what we call Florida/spotted gars in the trade these days...whether or not it could be a hybrid is hardly possible to determine without the appropriate testing. given the pattern and morphology we see here, i would stand by Florida/spotted...
...the flipside being we don't even know if the Croc II is a Florida x gator or spotted x gator...so figuring out hybrids is an issue yet to be resolved in the gar-world --

I know that there are some very good gar experts on here. I have also seen lots of Florida/spotted and shortnose gars. I feel from what I see it is a Florida. THat is why I just left my .02 cents on it and MADE sure to say "I dont know for sure but I say Florida". I thought it would be best for it to be determined by solomon or poly.
