Mine sucks then, only has nitrite. I had to buy a separate kit for nitrate. Guess I got screwed!

Sent from my LG-P509 using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

Seriously? That's messed up! Lol. Yeah my API master kit came with ph, high ph, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. And four test tubes lol...you did get screwed!

nitrAte of 0 is wrong. But nitrIte of 0 is correct. Any suggestion is plausible. He could have bumped his head or something in the water just messed him up

mine came with all those also only thing i can come up with is i cant leave the tank alone im almost ocd about keeping it clean i may be doing to much..and not letting the good stuff build up.all my other fish are fine happy ate well this morning guess ill chalk it up to a lesson learned and try and leave it alone more

Don't wash out the filter media with tap water as it can kill the bacteria, if you gravel vac, don't dig all the way to the bottom as you have good bacteria living down there

off topic, but does that go for sand as well ??

I don't think it was off topic. You were talking about cleaning a lot, so I was making sure you weren't killing the BB when you're cleaning. And as for sand, you NEED to mix it up because it compacts and can get anaerobic. Then harmful gases that can kill everythin in your tank are released. I just light siphon over the top then run my fingers through it to keep it loosened up.

beneficial bacteria is sticky, so it will not get sucked up by running your gravel vac to the bottom. you should do this to get all the detritus out of your substrate.

thanks for all the help.. thats probably part of my problem i have been washing filter media with tap water.i have sand but when i vacume i let it pick up the sand and then tilt it and it all rolls back out

You must not have a very powerful gravel vac. When you stir up the gravel it releases all the bacteria, which either gets sucked into the siphon or into the filter. And then you change the filter and bam, you have no bacteria breaking down any waste. Tell me more about how BB is sticky???

I think it's alright to siphon sand because it compacts which will end up doing more harm than good. I would just have more biological filtration in your filters if you're using sand. I'd rather no BB than harmful gases for sure killing my stock.
