Can I house a ray in a 180 for life

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive got 3 pbass about a foot and 2 motoros wonder how much longer thell last in there !!! its a 6 by 2 by 2 so only 180 gal added anoth 150 leters in the sump tho.

How long have the motoros been in there, I suspect the large stocking is holding back their growth, my marbled motoro (which are smaller) female is only just over 1 year old and I wouldn't put her in. 6x2x2 on her own.

Out of interest what level of nitrate is present in the water, I imagine you are doing vast and regular water changes?

the 24" width is the bummer. anything less than a 6x3x2 is insufficient IMO.

So a 6x3x2 with a bunch of rays in it like most people do is better than a 6x2x2 with one ray??? The way I see it my 13 inch MM/Mantilla still has more space and water volume than people with a gang of rays in a larger tank. He is happy and Healthy!

Id say get a male motoro to start off with and he will be good for a long time.

A 6x3x2 is a third more volume, rays do not seem to mind being on top of each other and they really seem to like touching. Having said that two in a 6x3 is still a squeeze.

A 6x2 has quite a small volume and is easily affected by waste.

My male pearl is smaller than a male motoro at just over 14inches aged 3 and I need to upgrade my 6x3, not due to water quality but due to the footprint, it is really too small. I am going to go over 4 wide and I will still feel a little guilty when I think of the wild space these fish would roam....and mile ware captive bred.

I personally would not put a single male motoro in a 6x2x2 for any longer than 6 to 12 months from a pup sized fish.

Well I am going to definitely do a drip system for my 180 and eventually all my tanks. The idea of no more WC's is exciting!

the motoros have only been in there for bout 2 months the nitrate has aboit .20 or what ever it is just slightly off nothing really low. i have a little amonia witch i think is from the waste left on the floor withch i clean every 2nd day and i do a water cange of 40% 1 time a week. is this enough? my PH is low 6 maby 5.5 i cant really tell is this ok or to low. and i heard that when the ph is this low amonia is not toxic?

You probably have ammonia because of the low pH - the bacteria are probably going dormant.

Yes, the ammonia is nothing like as toxic at low pH but if you do a water change that brings the pH above 7 and you have ammonia in the tank, it's immediately toxic. My money says lots of rays are killed this way.

You wanna bring that pH up to just below 7 using baking soda to let the filter catch up. Or do a water change to reduce the ammonia while also bringing the pH up. If the pH comes above 7 and you have ammonia, you need to get on top of water changes immediately.

This is basic stuff.

yee thats what i thought im just scared to fluctoiate the ph to much coz i have a huge log in my tank witch is oveusly dropping the ph so how can i keep the ph stable at just under 7?

Much more likely that the biological action of the filters is dropping the pH. Add Baking Soda or change water and measure the pH as you go. Experiment.
