I know it probably feels like everyone is getting at you but try not to take it personally. Their only concern at the moment is the health, long term and short term, of the fish in question. The 75g will do the oscar for a while but even then you may be looking to upgrade after a year or so once it gets some size on it. Oscars get very tall and thick not just long, put that with the fact they eat like pigs and a small volume of water becomes unsutainable without almost daily water changes. You may eventually need a 90g or a 5ft+ tank for the long term, just keep that in the back of your mind as it grows.
There are lots of good fish that would do well in a 65g tank. If a tank is anything under 15" in depth then assume you cant put a fish that gets longer than about 8-10". This will allow plenty of turning room and the tank will definitely be a home for life for an 8-10" fish.
Also don't believe a word from the store assistant/managers lips about maximum sizes and remember the names of the people (Balton, RD., Aquanero, etc) who are being quite sarcastic and dismissive to a couple of members giving utterly stupid advice that will kill your fish, they are the ones you need to pay attention to so you can avoid the mistakes that most experienced keepers have made many moons ago.
If you listen to the people worth listening to, you will learn who they are, then you will do fine. You just need to trust our judgement and experience a little.
Tank size is not a choice, far from it. Even the most novice of keepers know a proper sized home is essential. Saying anything else is just more stupidity from the mouth of morons, you know who you are!!
There is too much of "what is the minimum tank size" and "can my oscar live in a 15ltr bowl with my red belly?" going on. It seemed to start as novices starting out without a clue but now it almost seems like a sub-culture of keepers who feel the need to spout their crap about how tank size is a personal choice or sailfin plecos will do fine in a 25g tank for life because they only grow to the size of the tank. I understand going against the grain but not when it leads to the suffering of an animal.
You really need to tell us what you like but one thing is for sure stay away from potential tank busters, anything that gets larger than 10" max IMO.
chiclid flakes.I apologize for the sarcasm, I was aggravated. This started several threads ago and I gave solid friendly advice in the beginning. Let's start over if it's ok with everyone.

Balton, I can completely understand your frustration. Between this thread and the "I'm doing it all wrong" Overstocked thread, I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack when i go through and read the posts. And it isn't necessarily the OP's inexperience, but some of the moronic remarks that people are making that show no concern for the ultimate outcome.
Oscaroo, what tank did you have the Convict and BP in? Is the BP in the tank with the O? Also, Tropical fish flakes didn't kill your convict. They might not have had the optimal nutritional value for your cichlid, but they certainly did not kill the fish. Do you check your water parameters?
