Can prazi pro help a new ray to eat?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I left the teaspoon full of blackworms in overnight from yesterdays PM feeding that the ray ignored. This morning most of the worms were gone. It's a barebottom with snug divider so I'm confident she snacked during the night. added another teaspoon this morning. hopefully they're all gone when I get home later.

Also, have any of you seen white larve in your blackworms before? about half inch long? much wider than blackworms and shorter? Not worm looking at all really.

I'll try to get a picture

My question would be if you had no parasites, why did you treat for them?

I thought I had a potential fluke problem with 1 of my leo's, but it turned out to be something else. I was told by 2 separate experienced ray keepers that they use it twice a year for maintenance and confirmed that there would be an appetite boost, as I saw with my other fish.

FYI deisel the ray i mentioned above died after 26 days of not eating. Was incredibly sad, my first leo ray. The amount of stuff I did to try to get this ray to eat was unbelievable. Died 2 days after the blackworms finally came in. Would chew and spit for 15 mins at a time. Even thinking about it still pisses me off because of what I couldn't do to help it and the mistakes I made which I have since learned from. Watch him closely, and if a ray doesn't eat 1-2 days there's a cause for concern, look into it immediately.

Sad story, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Question, was the Leo a pup Dave?

In a way I guess, it was young, but not newborn young. 6-8 inches in diameter, so I know it's not equivalent to your situation but still. Young rays should eat 3 times a day, after 10 inches probably twice a day. They really are fragile, but kinds tough at the same time in different regards which is cool.

Leeches. I have seen them before in some black worms that I ordered.

It may be possible. I never had a problem. You can pick them out of the black worms if you are really worried.

I removed and examined under magnification. They are quite different than the typical leech that I get up here at my Washington home. I believe they are probably some sort of parasitic worm leech. I don't think they are a "fish" leech. I could be wrong.

The fish eat them just like the blackworms, so I'm not too concerned. They also appear to die and turn white with colder storage which the worms can handle.

Neat update. Whenever I lift the blanket from over the side of the tank with the ray. She lifts the front of her disc and waits. I have a long tank cleaner stick that I use to shuffle the clusters of blackworms under her front disc. The stick used to stress her out and scare her. Now she knows it means food and just waits for me to sweep food under to the mouth. Much more active but still weak. Lots of improvement and feeding. I think we're gonna make it.

Hope she continues to improve. I too noticed the leeches didn't like the cold temps and would turn white.

Just a thought, I fish with leeches as bait, my thoughts are that they wouldn't be so bad really, but then again what leeches do to a wild fishes stomach is not my problem, plus like you said yours may not be the typical leech, so probably best to stay away, but fish do eat them in the wild so idk if they'de be bad for an aquarium fish. I never wanted to risk it, but my guess is they would be fine.
