Canister Debate: Which Do You Use?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
XP3, MAGNUM 350, EHEIM 3122, ODEYSSA 4, and JEBO 838x2...XP3 is the best out of what i have. cheap for a canister, excellent gph, lots of room for media, and easy maintanence.

Ive used em all, MAgnum 350, Filstar xp3, Fluval Fx5, Love canisters even more than my wet/dry. I actually just got a slightly used complete set-up eheim 2260 for 75$, So I will be reviewing how the 2260 and Fx5 match up. But ya the fX5 isnt all its cracked up to be no matter what media I use after 2 weeks the flow is cut in half and it blows bubbles some microchip. Xp3's are reliable but for some reason have never impressed me, just kind of an average filter to me. Magnums are just outdated mine has been sitting unsed for years now just didnt keep the water that crystal clear that everyone wants.

my 02.

I have only used Rena XP3 and eheim 2215.

of the two, the Rena is far superior to the eheim.

better flow, more media, better outlet options (included), great media, self priming and cheaper.

the only advantage I found with the eheim, was it said the name 'eheim' on it...:)

but the 2215 is not exactly the flagship eheim either so...

I'm a believer in the XP3 after joining this website. For the price and functionality of it, I don't think you can beat it.

I have magnum 350's on my 90gal and they work great. But as with anything its just my opinion, and we all know what opinions are like.

We have several Fluval 405's running and I couldn't be happier with them. We will be setting up a couple of larger tanks soon with an Fx5 and possibly another couple 405's. I made my decision after using a number of differant cannisters over the years. The price/preformance level of the fluvals is hard to match and using the same type of filters on all the tanks makes keeping spare parts a simple task. Eheim's are high quality and generally better biological filters than fluvals but thats not what I use my cannisters for so that's not an issue. The price on comperable Ehiems is enough higher that I can have a couple extra 405's on hand in case of emergancy.

wow. it seems like the more I read about canister users on the net, I see a few things that seem common everywhere:

1. the rena XP line seems to be arguably the most popular

and

2. many people that have used the XP and the eheims actually prefer the XP line.. interesting...

3. many people do not like the fluvals..although the FX5 is starting to gain momentum..

Do ya think Rena has got Eheim shaking in their boots? :)

I couldn't agree more. I'm and XP2/3/4 fan, and my neighbor is converting from Eheim to XP, as he saw how much easier it is for me to do cannister maintenance than it is for him on his. I love my XP's.

how much easier is it then to clean a rena in comparison to an eheim?

im using all kinds of eheim, from 2213 to pro2's and pro3. i find them very easy to clean, especially if you have the little taps and the media in bags.
