Hey guys, I'm looking to setup a 45 gallon Hex I have lying around as a planted invert tank in my room so I can pay attention and learn about these animals. I was looking to find a canister filter that would do a great job of pulling particulate without really paying for all the bio potential of most filters so the plants can get their jollies.

As for price/GPH and general design the Marineland Magnum Canister resembles a vacuum to me witch is good for particulate as that is my primary goal. I don't expect to condition or buffer the water with my filter by placing peat or anything in it. What is the diff between the regular 350 and pro??? And how does this compare for my ambitions VS a Eheim Classic Canister? Again I really just want the canister to pull particulate I hope to make the tank relatively self sustaining otherwise I'm just going for clear water. Biofiltration is not really a concern.

I believe the bio wheel is the difference between the Magnum 350 and the pro version. It doesn't sound like you would want the bio wheel since your are using your plants to process the nitrogen compounds.

I have an old magnum 350 lying around. I liked it at first but it is noisy, uses a lot of power, doesn't do that great of a job at fine particles and the cartridge has to be changed frequently.

For perfectly clear water nothing I have found beats a DE filter. Even if you don't run a DE filter continuously they do an excellent job at getting all the particles out of the water.
