i just got my 1st canester this week so im far from the best person to give advice..BUT the fluval 305 might be worth you looking at. its got 4 good size pre pads that act as bio as well as taking out bit dirt, then it has 3 trays split in 2 nothing stoping you puting fine pads in all of them but i dont think u would have to,,,i had a look at mine for the 1st time today its catchin all that its sucking up, i swaped it around a bit tho fine filter last was wrong even tho thats what the guy in shop told me i think in time i might just hav fine in 1 side and put more bio in..

The pool sand filter sounds interesting but honestly haven't seen one that would fit under a hex or function well at a measly 300 gph. I think a DE filter might be more appropriate for this small tank. If you know of any smaller sand filters link me I'll consider. The Hayward is big but can fit inside my hex stand no issue I'm pretty sure, with enough room for the separate pump.

I have a marineland multistage canister ATM that I don't care for, but I also setup my friends fluval... I've never disliked a device more in my life. It is my honest comparison between the two brands. Had many unreasonable issues with it priming for whatever reason then it took 2 days to get the air out, even though I prefilled it because of the priming issues! The construction was extremely poor compared to my marineland, oh I could go on. I honestly would be happy if I never bought or worked on either companies canisters ever again but the marineland is far superior to the fluval.

no probs like i say this is my 1st canister so i dont know what to expect, but the 1 i got was easy as A B C to set up and get going and also its easy as pie to clean,

i hear you, at the end of the day you would think its not hard to make 1 and get it right but god knows why some companys just fuc up,,if i knew what i know now i would have just brought the tank and make my own stand so i could have put a sump in, but hay here i am just tryin to get it so i have very little work to do on it,

Been there done that, lol. Sumps and OTB are my favorites as they are easiest to service IMHO. If I could fit a sump in this stand I would but hex won't fit any of the ones I have lying around or one I would build easily so I'm going to do another canister, I would use the one I have but I dislike it way too much.
