Catching juvenile bowfin?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its times like these that i wish i lived in an area where you can just walk to a river and start fishing. gotta drive everywhere where i live.
It's the same for me exept for a small pond that has some nice bass. Nothing else though.

Set your minnow trap and use a hook and line somewhere else.

Now you've got me wanting to go after one again.:D
That's what I did. The main problem was the water level. It was really high. If you do go After them and get one tell me how you did it!

I tried again today and caught nothing but a 3 pound bass. I saw some small fish gulping air but it was too far for my cast net. I tried fishing a tiny jig head with a small peice of fish on it. Didnt catch jack squat. I may try fishing the backwaters of lake Raleigh. It seems really swampy and full of vegetation. The only problem is the only way to fish it would to be to wade in it or use a kayak. I have no kayak but may be able to find some waders.

I know that they are in the place I've been trying. I've caught big ones there before. Its the time of year and the fact that I need a little one holding me back. Everyone I've asked has said that small ones are difficult to impossible to catch.

After quitting for a while I am going to start trying again. Going tomorrow to see if I can get any. Does anyone have any tips for catching them? My minnow trap was stolen and my castanet was ripped up bad. I have to use a fishing rod and a dip net. Went last weekend and caught two really big bowfin. One was in breeding colors so that may be a good sign.

crappiekeeper i'll see ya out there tomorrow at some point.. will bring my minnow trap to give it a shot

I catch tons of those from a strip pit that floods from my local river every year, those and gar is about all thats in it. I use frozen market shrimp, they are a bit slow it deciding to bite but there is almost never ending supply.
