Caught Him in a stream by my house....what is it

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Noted. But I think that people do learn here, I know I have. I started keeping fish with a walmart 10 gallon and a KOI. The most important thing that I have learned here is that being a jerk, even when you are right, gets you nowhere, and isn't beneficial to the community, the person you are trying to inform, or yourself. BTW, the internet is the new "book".

I'm not saying people don't learn here. I'm saying that I'm not the teacher.

Was I really a jerk in this thread? I explained the troubles of wild trout and mentioned that shame should be involved with the activity of taking wild gamefish considered not so well off as self sustaining populations. I think some folks around here have very thin skin when it comes to looking in the mirror.

Again this topic has been discussed several times and the person in question has done this on more than one occasion and isn't a "new guy". Are we supposed to just coddle repeat offenders and turn a blind eye to the regulations?

If these things keep popping up....we won't have a hobby anymore.

This is really none of my business but why can't you teach.. that is why we are all on MFK either to teach or learn and share.. you definitly have alot of knowledge to offer... you would never be labeled a jerk.. you are very smart but you just get too impatient..some of us take a little while to understand..

It's not that I can't teach, I've just not accepted the role a teacher. Many other sources exist better than me or a forum...any forum.

My behavior is directly in opposition to the lax standards of following the regulations and ethics by certain native fish guys. This is my hobby and I simply want to be able to continue it without a small group of guys ruining it for me and the rest of the guys that follow the rules.

Just get the ID books and don't take fish you shouldn't. Follow the law and respect the wild fish please.

I think I got it. Thanks Guys. I won't collect them anymore. Cool?

Poly... you must be talking about the frogs.... So Now I'm up to two collected species unidentified. Well three with that freeky eel thing. :) ... I wouldn't say thats a "habit" but whatever.

I found some cool animals in the wild. I'd like to know what they are. I don't carry my camera around everywhere or a book for that matter. So I bring em home and ask you all.

This I will not do anymore. I'll bring my camera or bring a book.......Okay I won't do any of that but I won't collect them...Cool?

and I'm not a conservationist I'm a dude that likes fish and being outside.

Cool :)

The problem however with all three of these is they all three either are or could be listed protected wildlife...That's not cool...It is also a good way to get yourself in deep poop if you are not careful. Ignorance of the laws or lack of species ID skills will not be an accepted excuse should you get caught by a Conservation officer with a listed species..It ain't good for the Native hobby either to collect things and ask questions later..

Regardless you now have a freaky eel thing that will need some care..How is it doing???

Fishes of Washington will certainly be a good resource for you but costs a few bucks. I'm not sure Amazon has the best price but here is a link in any case.

I'll bet a local library will be able to get a copy of this for you as well.

Peterson's field guide to freshwater fishes of North America is a low cost must have book for everyone interested in field ID.

I have a soft standard camera case and I use a "lock and lock" water tight food storage container to protect my camera in the water. It cost me less than three dollars at target.

Very nice fruitbox.

Per your suggestion, I just bought "Fishes of MN" waterproof!

Sometimes all I can do is laugh when I see some of the temper tantrums on here. I doubt anything you (Teleost) say, rant, *itch, moan or complain about is going to have any effect. In fact I would bet that saying it without stomping your feet on the ground would have more of a positive out come. I don't condone taking endangered fish from the wild but I myself collected all the fish in my tank from local lakes and guess what… there’s not a single thing you could complain about that would change what I do in any aspect of my life. I just don't care enough about what people on the internet think. If Derpeder does I think he has much more to worry about then the DNR.

Did you laugh when all snakeheads were banned due to the actions of a few irresponsible American aquarists?

In fact I have no intention of turning minds here into those that follow laws or respect rules. It's been proven time and time again that many here have absolutely no regard for them (not aiming this at you Derpeder since you want to do the right thing)

I can at least hope that some members might keep illegal activities kept in private (however following the law is the best approach) and perhaps wildlife officials that read the various forums will understand that not all native fish guys are haphazard law breakers.

The fact that you think you know what kind of person I am by suggesting I'm against the taking of Native fish for the aquarium shows how little you pay attention around here.

I don't care if people here get their noses out of joint when they're called out on illegal activities. Is there really a nice way to tell someone their breaking the law? Does it matter how it's said? Either way I've not asked you to change any aspect of your life Skyy but you feel comfortable giving me advice on being a suck up Mr. nice guy.

No, the snakehead problem isn’t funny. Taking one fish that has a horrid survival rate out of the wild and introducing a fish that crashes the ecosystem are hardly in the same realm of action. He didn’t do it knowingly as he didn’t even know what it was. The fact you make it a point to say you your self pull fish from the wild then condemn other people that break laws is even worse. Its then ok by your thinking to break laws but only the ones that you your self break? If your suggesting that it is one of the most asinine things I’ve ever heard with out a doubt. As far as a nice way of saying someone is breaking the law? Sure, Derpeder just so you know that was an illegal activity as the fish is endangered and you could get into trouble if there happens to be a DNR officer walking around your back yard when you pull that fish out. More over that fish could have been the one to save the species. Done. It is also clear you don’t care that you try to belittle people in these forums. No your right I don’t pay close attention to what you say, although I have noticed you complain an awful lot and much more then most. No you haven’t asked me to change. You would be wasting your time doing so. I was simply pointing out you have no problem asking others to do so. Nor am I giving advice or being a “Nice Guy”, I am just stating the obvious that MFK’s reputation of being full of fish snobs and *ss holes as other sites put it is rightfully deserved thanks to members like your self. You don’t have to be a nice guy to be considerate of others. With that I’m done with this high school level argument don’t bother responding I won’t be reading it.

Could not agree more. The way of putting things is tottally counter productive, IMO.
