why not also get another heater? and a slow descent wont hurt

haha. then let the betta cool off for a while :D

I think I can get him to buy a sponge filter, considering the fact that they cost less than $5. It's the heaters that are the problem. They're are never cheaper than $10, and ones meant for smaller tanks like the 2.5g are $15-25!

After doing some trading on craigslist, I ended up with a commercial 30 gallon aquarium that was used to keep lobster at a restaurant. It has a built in sump, chiller, and fan. It has a lot of work to do on it. I have to work out what to do with the chiller, there is an intake on the bottom of the tank, and the overflow at the top is too big. I also need lights. Hopefully I can work all of this out, but I can't complain, because since I traded for it, it's technically free. If I can't work out the bottom overflow then maybe I'll have to try a bare bottom saltwater, if that's a thing.

The dimensions are 30 x 20 x 22. Those were the dimensions of the tank, not including the trim. I used those dimensions to calculate the volume of the tank and it came out to nearly 60 gallons. Twice of what the person I traded with told me.

That's a great project. Lobster tanks are usually equipped with a UV. Required by law.
